Tacoma 8-plex movie theater set to close
TACOMA, WA — Even upgrading to digital wasn’t enough for the Galaxy Narrows as the theatre closed this past week. There just wasn’t enough business to cover the hundreds of thousands of dollars they already spent.

Bargain movie theater Maxi Saver 12 closes
WEST MIFFLIN, PA — After 20+ years in business, the Maxi-Saves Cinemas has closed. No comment from Carmike on the closure of the cinema, popular for its $1 flicks.

Regal closes River Oaks 8
DECATUR, AL — The River Oaks 8 closed last weekend after a run of 20+ years. The Carmike 8 is also scheduled to close within the next few months as both make way for a new theater opening in the mall.

Real West II Theater to close Jan. 13
SILVER CITY, NM — Real West Cinema II is closing its doors next month due to operational costs. The owner estimated it would take $150,000 per screen to upgrade the projectors and seats.

Encore’s Upper Canada Place triplex closes; cost of converting to digital proved too much
BURLINGTON, CANADA — Encore Upper Canada Place closed on December 13 after over 25 years in the business because it couldn’t afford digital projectors. This leaves downtown with no operating theater.

PRESTONBURG, KY — The historic Strand Theatre is set to close on January 6 after 60+ years in business. They just couldn’t afford to upgrade their twin screens, leaving the city with no operating cinema.

Classic movie house closes in Teaneck
TEANECK, NJ — 75+ years after opening, the Cedar Lane Cinemas closed last week. Efforts are already underway to save the theatre that Majestic-Star closed, most likely due to the cost of running it and converting it to digital.

Rave CityPlace in Kalamzoo to close in January and may reopen after renovations
KALAMAZOO, MI — The Rave CityPlace 14 in downtown Kalamazoo will close in January. There are reports that it will be taken over by another theater operator and will reopen in the spring after renovations are completed. Rave’s other theaters in Michigan are in Ypsilanti and Flint.

ICE closes Chatham 14 in Chicago after sheriff posts eviction notice on the theater
CHICAGO, IL — Community were very disappointed with the sudden closing of the ICE Chatham 14. This leaves no theaters on the South Side of Chicago and few entertainment options for the neighborhood period.

Roxy Theater closes; owner may reopen it himself after renovations
PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Roxy Theater has closed as the owner tries to figure out what to do next. He’d like to maintain it as a traditional movie house, but the costs of making it more comfortable and upgrading the projection are prohibitive.
