News About This Theater
Originally opened by Cineplex on September 11, 1980, it is the oldest operating movie theatre in the Halton Region. After apparently closing for the final time due to vandalism on September 17, 1998, Encore Upper Canada Place Cinemas has been reborn as a second-run theatre.
Classic early-1980’s Cineplex, Encore has three 55 seat theatres, with the largest being 98 seats. Encore still has the original orange snack bar and is constantly being upgraded by ownership.
The Upper Canada Place Cinemas was closed in December 2012. It was reopened in July 2015 by Cinstarz.

This is a great theatre to see second run films. The theatres are small, but cozy. Great popcorn. I am so glad they were able to re-open it!
I thought that the Rainbow Market Square 6 in downtown Toronto was also one of the “original” Cineplex theatres, having opened around 1981 or ‘82 and before Canadian Odeon taking over Cineplex theatres.
I don’t attend these theaters anymore (and haven’t for five years, or so). Bad luck or bad theaters? I’d say the picture was fine, but: I saw “The First Wives Club” there and Midler’s and Keaton’s voices are very distinct. The film/projection speed was a little fast, and their voices sounded…fast and higher. There was a vintage Dionne Warwicke song used in the film, and I thought it ‘sounded’ like her (like, maybe they used a ‘sound-alike’ or something). According the end credits, it WAS her. And on top of that, there was no heat. There was a portable space heater standing in the aisle (one left aisle in this aud) and an usher checked it, every-so-often. Not too distracting. Another time, at the start of the show, the music was left on throughout the trailers and the first five minutes of the movie. A few patrons finally exited, and I assume they alerted somebody of the problem. And just small, in general. I haven’t been back since.
The Encore Upper Canada Place Cinemas are now closed. The final day of operation was this past Thursday, December 13. The reason for the closure was the high cost of digital conversion. A newspaper article disputes some of the above information. The venue had six screens with a total of 477 seats. It opened in 1985. Encore Films took over operation in 1999. An article appeared in the Spectator (Hamilton, Ontario) on Wednesday, December 21 entitled “Burlington downtown theatres go silent”. Correction: The Spectator article is dated Wednesday, December 19, 2012. There is no statement on the Encore or Upper Canada web sites about the closing, but there are no film titles or show times listed.

This has now re-opened as CineStarz Burlington. This is the fifth CineStarz in the chain.
This cinema opened on September 11, 1980. It closed on September 17, 1998. Its final films include The Truman Show, Dr. Dolittle, Mulan, The X-Files, Return to Paradise, and Six Days, Seven Nights. Encore Cinemas took over soon after.
