Vinegar Hill Theatre shuts doors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Even digital projection couldn’t help save the Vinegar Hill Theatre. The local single-screen favorite closed last weekend due to its inability to compete with larger local theaters.

Historic Howell Theater officially closes
HOWELL, MI — After 85 years in business, the Howell Theater closed last week. It will reopen next summer as the second location of the Root Restaurant. The theater, Livingston County’s last, will have one final benefit screening of “Back to the Future” on August 13.

Robinson Crossing 6 closes
NORMAN, OK — The local discount favorite Robinson Crossing 6 closed last week after over 20 years in business. No reason was given but one has to assume the low prices couldn’t cover the costs of a digital conversion. AMC operated it originally before it became a second-run house in 2002. The cinema was especially popular for families and students.
The Norman Transcript not only covered the closing but also looked at other shuttered Norman theaters through the years.

Morristown’s Headquarters finally closes
MORRISTOWN, NJ — After a brief reprieve two months ago following the Clearview acquisition, the Headquarters Theatre has ultimately closed. Bow Tie tried to keep it open but the landlords didn’t seem interested.

Carmike Cinema 7 closes
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Cinema 7 closed last weekend after over 20 years in business. Plans are to tear it down for a new hotel. Quite a change for a city that used to be covered in Carmike screens.

Early Muvico theater to close
DELRAY BEACH, FL — It appears the Delray Beach 18’s days are numbered as it’s set to close sometime to soon. Instead of being a victim of the digital conversion, the landlord of the Plaza of Delray just wants to build an LA Fitness in its place. The theatre opened 20 years ago as on of the first themed theaters of Muvico.

Egyptian set to close
SEATTLE, WA — Capitol Hill’s Egyptian Theatre is closing later this week as Landmark plans to move out. They’re trying to find a new tenant and maintain its booking with the Seattle International Film Festival.

Kinnelon Cinema 3 closes its curtain May 27
BUTLER, NJ — The Kinnelon 3 is soon to be no more as it will close May 27, a result of the Clearview acquisition that left out some theaters like the Headquarters 10. Memories of its nearly 40 year run will remain as its employees will relocate to the Kinnelon 8. Bow Tie did not plan to take the theaters like this one that are on month to month leases.

Theater Historian David Naylor Passes Away
The Theatre Historical Society of America has announced the death of theater historian, David Naylor. Naylor was the author of numerous books including “Great American Movie Theaters” and “American Picture Palaces.” He was also a tremendous influence on Cinema Treasures. This site was created, in part, as a way for users to keep his 1987 book alive with updates in perpetuity.
RIP, Mr. Naylor and thank you.

The State closes in London
LONDON, OH — The only theater in London has closed due to its inability to afford a digital projector. $250,000 had been sunk into the theatre the past few years but they didn’t have enough left for the conversion.
