Per the Regal website and numerous news reports this theatre closed after its shows on Thursday 3/9. Reporting is indicating that mall management is working on a lease for the space and will have an announcement in roughly a month. https://www.rochesterfirst.com/news/business/local-business/regal-cinema-greece-ridge-12-to-close-thursday/
The theatre is closing following it’s shows on Thursday 1/26, another victim of Cineworld’s bankruptcy reorganization. https://www.ideastream.org/arts-culture/2023-01-25/another-movie-multiplex-regal-at-great-northern-mall-to-close
This theatre is closing after the final shows 1/5 as a rejected lease from Cineworld’s bankruptcy. The theatre however has already been leased to local chain Dipson Theatres, which will take control 2/1. https://www.niagara-gazette.com/news/local_news/regal-no-more-capitol-theatre-to-be-operated-in-falls-by-dipson/article_c7f0bdf0-8c5e-11ed-bce5-73d124cd8643.html
As of November 20, Great Northern Mall has closed permanently in preparation of its sale to a local developer that plans on turning the site into a lifestyle center that would demolish a significant portion of the existing mall. There is plans to have a movie theatre as part of the new development, however currently there is no indication as to whether that would involve retaining the existing theatre or constructing a new one. The theatre is positioned where it could be detached from the existing structure, and there wasn’t at the time of its closure anything structurally wrong with it (other than the roof likely needing to be replaced). However, the original 6 auditoriums (1-4, 9, 10) have received no significant upgrades since they opened in 1988 and the Hoyts 4 (5-8) are still as they were when they opened in 1997.
As of January 2021, the Hollywood is now showing first run films. The $6/$9 admissions are still significantly discounted for a first run film especially when compared to the other first run theatres in Syracuse.
I’m not sure what to make of the RPX, from the pictures it appears to be Theatre 12. 12 is playing Spider Man at 2:50, 6:30, and 10:05. The 2:50 looks to be at RPX price ($16.40) and the other two shows are standard price ($14.10).
It appears that this theatre has closed. Although Fandango is still showing the theatre as temporarily closed, it is currently not listed on Regal’s theatre locator and never appeared on Regal’s reopening schedule. The final day of operation for this theatre was March 15, 2020 (the day NY prohibited the operation of theatres due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The Shoppingtown Mall complex has not reopened after its temporary coronavirus closure (as mall owner Moonbeam Capital has refused to invest in the New York State required HVAC upgrades that are required in order for the mall to operate). The mall has also recently declared bankruptcy in order to avoid paying an overdue property tax bill to Onondaga County, and also recently issued evection notices to all remaining inline tenants. Although it was not initially made clear if the evection notice effected the theatre, Regal has since had it removed from Fandango and its location locator. Given that information and the current condition of the mall the status of this theatre should be changed to Closed (as this closure is a business decision and not temporary). Its last day of operation was March 15, when the NY Pause order instituted the originally temporary closure.
Cineworld has elected to permanently close this theatre (the theatre’s box office is empty, the lobby has been cleared of all equipment, all interior and exterior signage has been removed, and the theatre has been removed from Regal’s locator and Fandango). The status of this theatre should be changed to Closed (as this closure is permanent not temporary) and its final day of operation was March 15 (the day the NY Pause order implemented the originally temporary closure).
Cineworld chose that color when they “re-branded” Regal to the current logo. The color matches the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (also where the Regal headquarters remains).
The 4DX renovation in Auditorium 4 is now complete and will open this Friday 3/6. Capacity will be 124, including 119 fixed seats and 5 wheelchair spaces. This will also drop the complex’s total capacity to 3,377 with the 118 seats lost during this conversion.
This article indicates that the current theatre opened in November of 1996 and was severly renovated and expanded by REG in 2007. https://www.fosters.com/article/20070101/GJBUSINESS_01/101010098
I was there this afternoon and the theatre was fairly busy. Its a standard design Hoyts multiplex that Regal Entertainment Group completed the standard generic recliner renovation and recarpeted the auditorium hallways with standard design generic REG carpeting. Other than that it looks exactly like the day Hoyts opened it 20ish years ago. They did however have extensive lines at concessions as the theatre is being forced like a number of other Regal locations by Cineworld to sell tickets at concessions rather than the box office.
Auditorium 4 is currently offline, which presumably would be for the previously planned installation of 4DX or ScreenX (both of which were included in the package of renovations that Cineworld and mall owner Pyramid Management Group agreed to in the Summer). This will add to the interesting history of Auditorium 4, which started life as a single sloped theatre and was subsequently split into two sloped theatres by original owner Hoyts and then unsplit back into its current form during REG’s 2004 renovation.
The operator of this theatre should be Regal Cinemas. ALthough Cineworld purchased Regal Entertainment Group, they are rebranding all 3 of the former REG brands as Regal and operating Regal as a wholly owned subsidiary of Cineworld .
