    Majestic Crest for sale

    Image

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Majestic Crest Theatre on Westwood Blvd. has just gone on the market (I just co-listed it) for $4.5 million. The history and architectural style of this theatre is incredible.

I would love to find a buyer who has an interest in a single screen theatre and keep this venue alive!

If you have any additional questions please contact me.

    Best wishes,
    Tom

  • L.A.’s art house theaters squeezed by growing competition

    Image

LOS ANGELES, CA — With the closing of the Laemmle Sunset 5 last month, it’s been rough for art-house theaters in Los Angeles. However, newcomers like Sundance Cinemas and Alamo Drafthouse are still planning on entering the market. While they think there’s plenty of room for providing a luxury experience, the neighborhoods of Los Angeles can only support so many such theaters. Laemmle is trying to fight this by expanding into less competitive areas.

    Image

SAGINAW, MI — The Temple Theatre Foundation has exceeded its goal of $5 million by raising $5,083,000 for the foundation’s endowment fund of which interest from the fund will be used for operations and upkeep of the historic theater. The money was raised by hundreds of people, businesses and foundations. The Shaheen family donated $700,000. They bought the Temple Theatre in 2002, saving it from demolition and restored the theater. They turned over the theater to the newly formed Temple Theatre Foundation last year.

  • Fight for 35mm

    Image

LOS ANGELES, CA — My name is Julia and I work at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, California. We are a repertory double feature house that opened in 1978. We screen films from every decade of cinema – from silents to foreign, independents, art house to contemporary. Films that make-up the glorious history of the art, that should be viewed as they were meant to be – in a theater with fellow film lovers, projected from film.

We only show films on 35mm.

    35mm Petition

The major film studios have decided that they eventually want to stop renting all archival 35mm film prints entirely because there are so few revival houses left, and because digital is cheap and the cost of storing and shipping prints is high.

Come for the smut, but stay for the classics

BROOKLYN, NY — The Brooklyn Paper did an interesting feature on the unique programming model of the Cinema Kings Highway. Taking advantage of a loophole in the city’s rules on adult establishments, they are able to show adult films on one screen while they present standard classics on another. All of this sets the stage for a very interesting mix of clientele.

Will Rogers Theatre to be restored

    Image

CHARLESTON, IL — The new owners of the Will Rogers Theatre don’t want to just reopen, they want to restore it to its grandeur. Vacant since 2010 when AMC left town, the plan is now to take whatever time necessary to install a new large screen after looking at the elements present and decide how to thoughtfully make it a palace again.
