    City to run Granite City Cinema

    GRANITE CITY, IL — The plan always was for city to eventually operate the year-old Granite City Cinema. The change in management went into effect on New Year’s Day. While STL Cinemas is stepping out, all the employees will stay.

  • Art house Cinema to begin construction on new multiplex

    ASBURY PARK, NJ — After only a couple years in the business, the much-needed independent cinema, the ShowRoom is expanding. They’re constructing a new three-level building with multiple screening rooms and even space for receptions.

    New horizons for Lincoln Theatre

    WASHINGTON, DC — While it’s had many uses over the years, the Lincoln Theatre has returned to a life as a full-time movie theater. Landmark will operate it. However, it’s not entirely up to Landmark. The D.C. Commission for the Arts & Humanities stepped in as well to prevent it from closing and are working together with Landmark.

  • Ace Hotel to incorporate renovated UA

    LOS ANGELES, CA — Good news for the former United Artists Theatre. After recently being sold, the future of the theatre was in doubt. Now it appears that The Ace, a boutique hotel chain, will renovate the spaces above and keep the theatre intact.

    Hitchcock films come alive on the big screen at the Lindo

    FREEPORT, IL — The Lindo Theatre is thrilled to announce its next classic film series! Beginning on January 11, 2012, the Lindo will feature films from the suspense and psychological thrill master Alfred Hitchcock himself during its Hitchcock Suspense/Thriller Film Series! All show times are at 1 and 7 PM on select Wednesdays at the Lindo Theatre, located at 115 S. Chicago Avenue in downtown Freeport. Co-sponsored by Highland Community College and Stephenson County Historical Society, admission to the Hitchcock Suspense/Thriller Film Series is $20 for the entire series or $5 per movie. Tickets are available at the Lindo box office. The series will kick off on January 11th with “Shadow of a Doubt” (1943), starring Teresa Wright, Joseph Cotton and MacDonald Carey.

    No list of suspense or thriller films can be complete without mention of Filmmaker/Director Alfred Hitchcock, who helped shape the thriller genre, beginning with his earlier silent films in the late 1920s. Lindo’s Hitchcock Suspense/Thriller Film Series will bring these classics to the big screen: “Shadow of a Doubt,” “Spellbound,” “Rear Window,” and “North by Northwest.” “We have received a great response from our patrons for our classic film series, and we are very excited to bring it back to the Lindo in 2012,” explains Shirley Johnson, an owner of Classic Cinemas.

  • Dental practice gives new life to old Belvedere Theatre

    CHARLOTTE, NC — After being closed for a number of years, the Belvedere Theatre is reopening and making the surprising return as a dental practice. Dentist Richard Dest received a loan as well as funds from the city to preserve the building and construct offices within it.

    Crookston theater turns 100

    CROOKSTON, MN — Billing itself as the longest continuously operating movie theater in the country, the Crookston Grand Theatre turned 100 this month. Despite its age, they’ve made plenty of updates from stadium seating to digital projection.

  • Skokie Theatre shuts its doors

    SKOKIE, IL — The Skokie Theatre is shutting its doors again. This time on the eve of its 100th Anniversary year, they just aren’t bringing in the revenue to continue operating. The mayor and the bank that’s owned it the past few years are trying to find a new owner so it can continue.

    Joy Theater on Canal Street comes back to life

    NEW ORLEANS, LA — As the first downtown theater to reopen post-Katrina, the Joy Theater is coming back. Not only will be used for film, but it will now be a showcase for concerts and live events.

  • WXXI, Little Theater announce merger

    ROCHESTER, NY — Both facing tough times, the Little Theatre and radio station WXXI have formed a merger. While they’ll still exist separately, they’ve joined forces to enhance fundraising and sales efforts. Time will tell whether whether this experimental partnership will be as mutually beneficial as they hope.
