Two former AMC execs launching new initimate dine-and-view triplex
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS — A new theater and dining concept is coming to the Prairie Village shopping center courtesy of two former AMC executives. Standees will provide entertainment targeted towards adults, but they won’t provide in-theater dining like many of their new competitors. They’re more focused on making the two separate entities successful on their own.

NYC theaters protest ban on super-size sugary drinks
NEW YORK, NY — A battle is heating up in New York between theater owners and the city over a ban on large sugary drinks. Due to the fact that theaters make more profits on concessions than anywhere else, a ban could lead to higher ticket prices.

Uncertain future for Naro Cinema
NORFOLK, VA — The Naro Expanded Cinema celebrated 35 years last week but they’re unsure of how many years they have left. They’re exploring their options of how to raise enough money for a digital upgrade.

Major renovations completed at Uptown Theater in Minneapolis; reopened on September 14
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Uptown is back following a $2M renovation. The theatre opened last week with digital projection and new luxury seating.

More theaters closing; unable to make the jump to digital
A story in the Huffington Post looks at the struggles of some small town theaters in converting to digital. The Isis in Crete, NE and the Onarga are a couple faced with raising almost $100,000 or closing.

Chicago’s Portage Theater has new owner
CHICAGO, IL — The future for it is still unclear but the Portage Theater has a new owner. Rumors point towards the owners of the Congress Theater being involved so they can turn it into a music venue.

Two brothers reviving closed Clay Theater in Green Cove Springs
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL — The Watzke brothers are ready to reopen the Clay Theatre later this month after four years of inactivity. They plan on applying for a license to serve beer and wine but also plan on building a family-friendly environment.

Cottage View Drive In to be replaced with a Wal-Mart
COTTAGE GROVE, MN — After 46 years, the Cottage View Drive-In will be closing this fall to make way for a Walmart, something hinted at for months. The shopping center will swallow the theatre that the owner has been trying to sell for years due to declining revenue and the lack of funds to convert to digital.

Chief Theater in Steamboat Springs closes
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO — The Chief Plaza 4 has closed after more than 70 years. There is no word on if another operator will step in to run it.
