    FREMONT, MI — The owner of the independent Fremont Cinemas gave a candid interview to Reddit the other week that was featured in the Hollywood Reporter. They discussed numerous topics such as digital projection and how much money the theatre can actually take in from ticket sales.

    Roxy Theater closes; owner may reopen it himself after renovations

    PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Roxy Theater has closed as the owner tries to figure out what to do next. He’d like to maintain it as a traditional movie house, but the costs of making it more comfortable and upgrading the projection are prohibitive.

    City of Aurora Survey results in: most want the Century 16 reopened

    AURORA, CO — After distributing a survey about the future of the Century 16, it’s clear that most want the theatre to reopen. Site of the tragic shooting in July, there is talk of a memorial to be built in the space of the particular theatre.

    NEW YORK, NY — The plans mentioned this summer to demolish the Loew’s Victoria have been moving forward. They claim however that the lobby will still be preserved in the new development.

    Landmark closes San Francisco’s Lumiere Theater

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Landmark closed the 45 year old Lumiere Theatre last weekend. While often criticized for its comfort, it had an esteemed history of successful independent cinema presentations, especially in the mid-90’s.

  • RC Theaters acquires, renames former Destinta Theater

    MIDDLETOWN, CT — RC Theatres has taken over the former Destina and renamed it Metro Movies. They’re undergoing renovations but trying to keep it simple with solid presentation and concessions.

    DITA 2 registration now open

    The Drive-In Theatre Alliance announces its 2nd annual DITA Meet to be held at the Boulevard Drive-In, Kansas City, Kansas, on Tuesday & Wednesday, October 16th & 17th. It is open to all theatre operators, but especially for all drive-in theatre operators.

    Demonstrations and presentations on digital projection and what is available, what will be required in conversion, and so on are on the program. There will also be vendors representing other aspects of drive-in operation like food service, sanitation, POS, and more. A daytime bus tour of some nearby ozoners (a chance to fraternize with fellow operators) will take place as well. Advance registration is $25 with a deadline to file of October 5th (late registration is $50).

  • AEG put up for sale; operates several former movie theaters as entertainment centers

    LOS ANGELES, CA — The sports and entertainment conglomerate AEG is up for sale and most of the talk has been about their larger assets like Staples Center and their stake in the Los Angeles Lakers. However, they also own numerous theatres such as the Best Buy in New York and the Bluebird in Denver.
