Milwaukee keeps searching for a downtown theater solution
MILWAUKEE, WI — In the almost 20 years since the Grand Cinemas closed, Milwaukee has been looking for someone to come in and provide a movie theater for downtown. Many proposals have come but none have ever come to fruition. One thing is for sure, it would have to complement the neighborhood.

Theater owners complain about Interstellar film release
After theater owners struggled to convert to digital the past few years, Hollywood is doing an about face with an upcoming release strategy that will be favorable to those with film projectors. Christopher Nolan, poster boy for keeping film alive, has convinced studios to release his upcoming film “Interstellar” in various formats including 70mm, 35mm and IMAX 70mm. Those film formats will be distributed a few days early too.
While it’s great for the consumer, is passing another projection cost back to the exhibitor fair?

Johnny Rockets to partner with drive-in theaters
Johnny Rockets is getting ready to serve up more than just burgers. USA Drive-Ins is planning to open 200 new drive-ins where Johnny Rockets' menu will be available in most locations. This is part of Johnny Rockets' Route 66 Initiative, placing special emphasis on car-culture.

Golden Gate Theatre Ownership Press Release
MONTEREY, CA — Monterey’s Golden State Theatre has officially changed hands. On October 1, 2014, Eric and Lori Lochtefeld, owners of the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, became new owners of the GST. After 10 years, Warren Dewey was pleased to pass on the cultural treasure and its rich history to the stewardship of the Lochtefelds. Having already demonstrated successful programming at the Redwood City Fox Theatre with concerts, live theater, lectures, corporate events and private parties, the Lochtefelds have shown that they are capable and talented presenters with an eye for business— good listeners to the community who can deliver the shows that people want to see. Their Fox Theatre was built soon after the Golden State, and was designed by the same architects, the Reid Brothers.

Webster leads by example
WEBSTER CITY, IA — Wrote off only a year ago, the Webster Theater reopened last month to fanfare following a dedicated push by locals and an investment of $200,000. Other downtown theaters are coming back too like the Coos Bay Egyptian and the Spencer Tivoli thanks to their importance in saving their main streets.

Hi-Pointe named St. Louis' best
ST. LOUIS, MO — The always popular Hi-Pointe Theater was named the best in the area by the Riverfront Times. They claim they won the honor by strictly focusing on the films and a quality presentation as opposed to fancier amenities.

Kress Cinemas closes
HILO, HI — While it had only been operated by Regal for a year, the Kress Cinemas‘ art deco building has been standing since 1932, most of its time spent as a department store. The fourplex will no longer show films and will now be home to the Sure Foundation Hilo church.

Majestic Cinema badly damaged in arson fire
LEEDS, ENGLAND — There isn’t much left after a horrible fire damaged the Majestic Cinema(Grade II Listed building) last week. It had recently been refurbished and had been operating as a nightclub. A man has been arrested for being responsible but a motive has not been established.

ROSELLE PARK, NJ — A lack of experience and necessary funds aren’t holding back Joe Shirley and Jared Pietz from following their dream of reopening the Park Theater. They’ve been hosting fundraisers and trying to get the neighborhood behind their campaign so they can reopen the theatre for film and live entertainment.

Howell Theatre reopens
HOWELL, MI — After just over a year in darkness, the Howell Theatre reopened last week. They’ve updated the theatre, repainting and adding digital projectors but the programming is what really is catching eyes. They’re making a commitment to nurturing talent in the area by showing locally produced films and live entertainment. Classic films will be shown as well.
