Palace Flashback Mondays are back
SYRACUSE, NY — The Palace Theatre is reviving it’s $5 Flashback Monday series but this time you might want to leave the kids at home. It’s all R-rated films from 1971 on with classics such as “The Shining” and “Pulp Fiction.” The series begins September 22 and goes till Thanksgiving.

Laurel residents picture uses for old movie theater
LAUREL, MD — The Laurel Cinema has been in limbo for years but locals haven’t given up on the 1929 theatre. The city now owns it and may demolish it as it’s been vandalized numerous times and frankly needs a lot of work. There’s still hope though that it would be renovated into some form of arts facility.

Quad Cinema changes hands
NEW YORK, NY — The 1972 Quad Cinema, the city’s first four-screen theatre, has been sold to real estate developer Charles S. Cohen. Not to worry though, the former owners turned down higher offers because of Cohen’s commitment to the theatre. He plans to extensively renovate it in 2015 and turn it into a repertory house primarily. The art-house favorite will live on.

AMC Yorktown to get luxury treatment
LOMBARD, IL — The Yorktown 18 has been growing and growing since opening 1970 but now it’s scaling down a bit, at least in seating capacity. This is because they’re now becoming AMC’s first dine-in theatre in Illinois thanks to their RedKitchen program. There will also be a bar and lounge, MacGuffins, near the theatre entrance. Most of the work should be done by the end of the year.

Garden Theatre beginning New Season
WINTER GARDEN, FL — The Garden Theatre, the restored 1935 former movie house, and the pride of the city, is beginning its seventh season since the re-opening. The fall events include: Sweeney Todd (September 12-October 5); UCF Flying Horse Big Band (October 17); Peter and the Wolf Ballet (October 25 & 26); Winter Garden Culture Fest (November 1 & 2); Six Guitars/Nashville Hurricane (November 14); Blues Brothers Tribute Concert (November 15); Christmas by Committee: A Musical (December 5-21); and Christmas Dickens movies (December 9-18). Free Event: Jon Boschen’s Garden Theatre Gala
GREENFIELD, MA — Throughout the twentieth century theaters have played a vital role in both American society and culture. Greenfield, Massachusetts had several theaters throughout the course of the twentieth century that greatly contributed to both the Greenfield community and Franklin County. The Garden Theatre was perhaps the most unique and the most memorable one to be built in the town due to its unique architectural style. After opening in 1929 and up to its 1983 renovation, the Garden’s atmospheric appearance greatly added to the programs and events that took place there and created a memorable experience for everyone who attended.

Old Michigan Theatre slated for redevelopment
DETROIT, MI — The former Michigan Theatre in downtown Detroit is slated to be redeveloped. Plans call for the old theater space, converted into a parking garage with much of the old details intact in 1977, to be converted into an amphitheater pending an assessment of the building. The office building portion of the Michigan Theatre Building would be freshened up aesthetically.

Tarantino takes over programming at New Beverly
LOS ANGELES, CA — Quentin Tarantino has owned the New Beverly since 2007 but has typically only been involved behind the scenes. That’s no longer the case as he’s taken over programming full time from the Torgan family that’s operated it for decades. He’s already removed the recently installed digital projector and plans the showcase his print collection as the theatre goes back to strictly film only as opposed to digital.

UPDATE 9/8: As noted in the comments below, Tarantino only purchased the real estate the theatre sits on in 2007, not the business.
