    Historic Park Theatre hosts its 4th Annual Film Festival

    ESTES PARK, CO — The 4th Annual Estes Park Film Festival will take place September 17-20 at the Historic Park Theatre in downtown Estes Park, Colorado. Built in 1913, the Park Theatre is the oldest operating movie theatre west of the Mississippi and is on the national register of historic places. Filmmakers from all over the world will travel to Estes Park to showcase their latest independent feature-length films, documentaries, and short films in one of Colorado’s historic cinematic landmarks.

    Star Trek Film Marathon and Expo to be at the historic Portage Theater

    CHICAGO, IL — The most noted films of the Star Trek Series will be on the big screen again at the Portage Theater September 4th and 5th. “The Wrath of Kahn” & “The Search For Spock” will be shown for these two days as double features and in there 35mm format. Part of the proceeds for this event will be donated to the theater for help in there ongoing restoration of this historic sight.

    Michael Jackson movie advance tickets

    According to a press release from Sony, the upcoming “This is It” movie will be released on October 28 for only two weeks; advance ticketing goes on sale September 27 worldwide.

    Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment announced today that Michael Jackson THIS IS IT will be released exclusively for a special, limited, two-week engagement worldwide, with the studio pushing up the debut of the film by two days, to Wednesday, October 28th. Due to the anticipated demand for this film, tickets for the two-week presentation will go on sale in most cities beginning on Sunday, September 27th.

    Separately, the producers of Michael Jackson THIS IS IT announced that Kenny Ortega has been set to direct the motion picture. The film is being produced with the full support of The Estate of Michael Jackson.

    CineMajestic’s Lorraine Cinema celebrates Anniversary with “Gone with the Wind”

    HOOPESTON, IL — CineMajestic LLC, the region’s leader for State-of-the-Art sound with first run films and the most comfortable theatres is celebrating it’s first full year of operation of the Historic Lorraine Cinema with the presentation of the the cinematographic David O. Selznick classic, “Gone With the Wind”, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh on Friday October 2nd through Sunday October 4th.

    “We’ll have the exclusive national play of Gone With the Wind and I’m very excited to finally see this classic” stated Joshua Caudle, owner of the Historic Lorraine Cinema. “I actually have never seen it because it just seemed a waste to see it on TV or even just at home. Now I can say it was the smart thing to do because I’ll see the new print the right way, and I’ve already got a lot of people coming to town to get this treat too. And its a great way to showcase all the work we’ve done on the Lorraine in the last year as the hands down most comfortable place to see a movie anywhere in the area. We’re really expecting this to be well received and that our community is proud of the gem they have at the Lorraine.”

    “Avatar” trailer tickets available today

    In an interesting move, there will be an exclusive IMAX trailer for the upcoming James Cameron film “Avatar” that hits select screens Friday. Free tickets for the trailer are available online starting today.

    Free tickets will be distributed online starting Monday for special Imax presentations of a 16-minute trailer for the 3D sci-fi action movie “Avatar.”

    The extended trailer of the 20th Century Fox film, featuring an on-camera intro by director James Cameron, hits 101 Imax venues in the U.S. and Canada on August 21 in a promotional push that was announced at the recent Comic-Con International confab in San Diego. On the same date, theaters worldwide will begin showing 2D and 3D “Avatar” trailers of more conventional length.

    Thoughts on the film or James Cameron aside, generating interest for a film in this way seems like a positive move that brings a bit more glitz to the exhibition process than we’ve seen lately.

    3 Strip Cinerama and more at the Cinerama Dome

    Beginning Monday September 7 and running for 4 days, ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome and Arclight Cinemas presents SEPTEMBERAMA. Monday September 7, “Woodstock”, 3 days of peace, love, and music condensed into a new 228 minute directors cut, presented in digital cinema.

    Then, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, “This is Cinerama” and “How the West Was Won”, presented in the original 3 strip Cinerama projection process with 7 channel magnetic sound.
    Plus, on Tuesday only, a unique single lens Cinerama 70mm double feature, “The Golden Head”,1965, starring George Sanders and Buddy Hackett, and “Holiday in Spain” with Peter Lorre. “Golden Head” is known as the “lost” Cinerama film, as it was never released in the United States, and “Holiday in Spain”, 1961, was originally released as “Scent of Mysetry” in smell-o-vision.
    All films are showing in The Cinerama Dome at ArcLight Hollywood.

    Tickets go on sale this Friday, August 14 on line at the ArcLight Website.

    “Wizard of Oz” to be shown in over 440 theaters on September 23rd

    On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its original release, the much-loved 1939 classic, MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz,” will be shown for one night only, September 23, 2009 at over 440 theaters nationwide.

    For one night, on September 23rd at 7:00 pm in over 440 movie theaters around the country, you’ll be able to walk up to the box office and buy a ticket for The Wizard of Oz. It’s the film’s 70th Anniversary, and to celebrate they’ve remastered the film and will show it in beautiful, high-definition.

    TCM teaming up with drive-in theaters

    This month, Turner Classic Movies is bringing a classic film series to drive-ins in the across the U.S.

    This August, TCM is teaming up with four different drive-in theatres on the East and West coasts for a Summer Under the Stars event. Every Sunday night (see below for start times), each drive-in will screen a film by one of the great actors featured in TCM August programming: Among the films are Elvis Presley’s Viva Las Vegas, Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief, Gene Hackman in Bonnie and Clyde, and the 1962 version of Lolita starring Peter Sellers. If you’re travelling in August, you can catch the same films in rotation at these four drive-ins: Atlanta’s Starlight Drive-in; the South Bay Drive-in in San Diego, California; the Mission Tiki Drive-in in Montclair, California; and the Rubidoux Drive-in in Riverside, California.

    “MAD, MAD WORLD” screening at Cinerama Dome

    HOLLYWOOD, CA — Stanley Kramer’s “IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD MAD, WORLD” is scheduled for a single performance Monday August 24, 2009 at ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood in the historic Cinerama Dome. “MAD WORLD” will be presented in 70mm Ultra-Panavision with the original sound configuration of 5 stage channels and mono surround.

    Starring a virtual who’s funny in Hollywood, “MAD WORLD” played a record 66 weeks at the Cinerama Dome.This print, struck in 2003 runs 176 minutes including the police radio calls during intermission. This is the most complete print of “MAD WORLD” available.

    When the film premiered on November 7, 1963 at the Cinerama Dome, the running time was over 200 minutes. 2 weeks into the run editors from United Artists came to The Dome and Warners Cinerama in NYC and cut almost 30 minutes out of the prints. Then back at the studio, they cut the negative to reflect the cuts made at the two theatres. Although extensive searches have be made throughout the years, the cut footage has never been found. This was actually a common practice in the 1960’s with films including “LAWRENCE OF ARABIA,” “CLEOPATRA” “2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.”
