TCM teaming up with drive-in theaters

This month, Turner Classic Movies is bringing a classic film series to drive-ins in the across the U.S.

This August, TCM is teaming up with four different drive-in theatres on the East and West coasts for a Summer Under the Stars event. Every Sunday night (see below for start times), each drive-in will screen a film by one of the great actors featured in TCM August programming: Among the films are Elvis Presley’s Viva Las Vegas, Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief, Gene Hackman in Bonnie and Clyde, and the 1962 version of Lolita starring Peter Sellers. If you’re travelling in August, you can catch the same films in rotation at these four drive-ins: Atlanta’s Starlight Drive-in; the South Bay Drive-in in San Diego, California; the Mission Tiki Drive-in in Montclair, California; and the Rubidoux Drive-in in Riverside, California.

I said years ago that TCM should try something like this at indoor venues. Not just any indoor venue, but real treasures, such as the Ziegfeld in New York, the Lafayette in Suffern N.Y., the Ritz in Elizabeth N.J. Big theatres, with big screens, the way movies should be shown. Perhaps someday this can become reality.

When I was programming the Lafayette I tried, unsuccessfully, to get TCM involved with our shows several times. I wasn’t looking for any sponsorship money from them, just a little publicity and potential help in securing certain titles.

I hope TCM are reading these letters…

Hello from Oregon… we have a delightful drive-in located south west of Portland or north east of Salem. It’s in Newberg on highway 99.
Also owned by a small family who operate the delightful single screen Cameo Cinema

Score a major one for DeAnza (all 4 D/I’s featuring this presentation are owned by DeAnza Land & Leisure Corp – who has spent the last few years massively remodeling and upgrading their existing drive-ins)!

I only wish they were showing double features and some flicks that are a bit more “drive-in-ish.” “Viva Las Vegas” & “Bonnie & Clyde” get a pass, but “Lolita” & “To Catch A Thief” kinda don’t fit the whole drive-in-movie vibe.

Hey!! I wish TCM would do something similar with some of the great big, wide-screen movie theatres here in the Boston area, such as the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, the Wang Center for the Performing Arts, and a whole bunch of other big-screen theatres! That would be so cool!
