“Avatar” trailer tickets available today

In an interesting move, there will be an exclusive IMAX trailer for the upcoming James Cameron film “Avatar” that hits select screens Friday. Free tickets for the trailer are available online starting today.
Free tickets will be distributed online starting Monday for special Imax presentations of a 16-minute trailer for the 3D sci-fi action movie “Avatar.”
The extended trailer of the 20th Century Fox film, featuring an on-camera intro by director James Cameron, hits 101 Imax venues in the U.S. and Canada on August 21 in a promotional push that was announced at the recent Comic-Con International confab in San Diego. On the same date, theaters worldwide will begin showing 2D and 3D “Avatar” trailers of more conventional length.

Thoughts on the film or James Cameron aside, generating interest for a film in this way seems like a positive move that brings a bit more glitz to the exhibition process than we’ve seen lately.

Sorry, cannot believe this is a positive in an attempt to sell a film, much less “glitz”. “Avatar”, no matter how much hype, will be a 2 week wonder. Consider “Sound Of Music”. Opened here in Melbourne as a Roadshow presentation to very soft business. If the present “opening weekend” figures were factored then, SOM would have closed the following week. Instead, it went on to break all box office records with a 31/2 year run due to word of mouth.
The 3D and IMAX 3D versions will account for much of the business and will last longer than the 2D 35mm version.

That’s probably what they said about Titanic…
Since he shot the movie in IMAX, I am especially looking forward to experiencing it in a TRUE IMAX venue and not the AMC IMAX-lite venues. True IMAX films are immersive but if you can add believable 3D, it can be something truly spectacular. I think Cameron is onto something really good.
I’ll probably see it in 4k 3D at the AMC in Rockaway, which will show 3D movies starting tomorrow with “G-Force”. It will be less expensive and closer than the IMAX 3D theater at Lincoln Square and Palisades Center, two true IMAX theaters.
Cameron used the PACE Fusion Digital 3D camera for this film. It was not produced in IMAX 15/70 format.

2-D: Inglourious Basterds, Shorts
When tickets were available yesterday afternoon…the movie website’s ticketing section crashed….and after the issue was resolved, shows in NY and LA were sold out mostly for the trailer. I’m sure the movies that will show the trailer this weekend will be busy, and the video sites will be busy showing the trailer online for those who can’t afford to see the trailer.
The standard length trailer will be released online at apple.com/trailers on Thursday, which will likely include some footage from the extended 16-minute trailer.
According to IMDB, the movie will actually be shown in two different aspect ratios depending on the format. The standard 2D version will be shown in 2.35:1 and 3D will be shown in 1.85:1
Why is it that most of today’s 3-D films are shot in 1.85:1? Back in the 1980’s, they were almost always shot in 2.40:1.
I saw the trailer online….and it’s in its 2.40:1 ratio..the 3-D version is 1.85:1. The trailer was good….looks weird but interesting. Should be more fun than a duo of jive-talking robots.
I saw the scope trailer before Inglourious Basterds. It looks like The Last Of The Mohicans but with aliens.
No matter how much hype this is going to be…AVATAR is not going to be the blockbuster that TITANIC was……
But you’ll never know…..probably smash boxoffice records…..opening day
