    Movie theater photo exhibit

    BROOKLINE, MA — “Celluloid Dreams: America’s Vanishing Movie Palaces and Drive-In Theaters”, photography by Stefanie Klavens is on view at The Gallery on the Plaza at the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Massachusetts.

    The exhibit will run through July 20 and there is a reception open to the public on Thursday, June 11, from 6-8 p.m. Brookline is adjacent to Boston (near Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts). Complete information can be seen here:

    What is DRIVE-IN SUPER MONSTER-RAMA?

    Ever wish you could go into a time machine and go back to a time when life was much more simple, but far more fun? Well, here it is! DRIVE-IN SUPER MONSTER-RAMA is two nights of classic horror and science fiction 35mm prints presented at an authentic drive-in movie theater. There will be two big shows on two consecutive nights which will start at dusk and go on until really late into the night! This is the second year in a row that we are hosting such an event, so we encourage all East Coast drive-in movie fanatics to attend and make it another rousing success! What could be better than a weekend getaway topped off with two nights of classic monster movies on the big outdoor screen? We realize that everything is so expensive these days, but admission is only $10 a person each night! Plus, children 12 and under are free with parent or adult guardian. How can you beat that? The Riverside’s concession stand is loaded with reasonably priced goodies, including hot foods, hot and cold drinks, candy, popcorn and much more!

    Garden Theatre announces summer movie season

    WINTER GARDEN, FL — The Garden Theatre, will present classic movies all summer on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. The genre for June is musicals; July features big screen films; August features actors, and the September picks are all series pictures. Admission to each presentation is $5.00.

    The 1935 renovated theatre is located at 160 W. Plant Street, and the boxoffice number is 407-877-4736. It has been operated since 2008 by the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which restored the house to its Mediterranean Revival splendor.

    NEW YORK, NY — “The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship of the Ring” October 9 and 10, 2009 at Radio City Music Hall with a live concert. Thanks to Warren G. Harris for posting this on the theater’s page, but with films almost never open to the public at Radio City, everybody should be aware of this wonderful event!

    Connecticut Film Festival - “Thought Provoking and Daring”

    The Connecticut Film Festival, now in its fifth year, has tripled their program offerings this year as they present over 260 + events, to be held June 2-7 at many venues in downtown Danbury. There will be over 130 independent films, 100 workshops, 70 bands and countless industry events and parties.

    New this year is an all original music component, of 70 local, regional and national acts at several indoor and outdoor venues, both free and paid. A film festival first for any festival in the nation; a 5-day Screenwriters Immersion Program, co-sponsored by the Writers Guild of America-East (WGA) and featuring a Master Class with Hollywood Screenwriter, James V. Hart (August Rush, Hook). There will be a focus on International Cinematographers, sponsored by the Romanian Cultural Institute, a “24-hour Cup O' Joe" Film Competition, where people of all ages and experience will stick to a city map and make their own 3-minute film in 24 hours, and then watch them all on the big screen.

    Once again, the Palace Theater will be presenting films all week (opening and closing nights too!) as well as the Heirloom Arts Theater (nee Empress Ballroom) which is the stagehouse of the former theater and is still a music venue.

    BROOKLINE, MA — An exhibit titled “Celluloid Dreams – America’s Vanishing Movie Palaces and Drive-In Theaters” featuring the work of photographer Stefanie Klavens opened Monday at The Gallery on the Plaza in Brookline, MA (adjacent to Boston).

    The exhibit will run through July 20 and is open Monday – Saturday. The Gallery is located at the intersection of Route 9 and Washington Street, across from the Brookline Village MBTA transit station, and is operated by the New England Institute of Art,

    The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation (LAHTF) takes its popular All About… series to two theatres near the intersection of Hill and 11th St., the Mayan (1927) and Belasco (1926) on Saturday, May 16, 10:30 am. The event begins at the Mayan. The public is invited to attend.

    Theatre historian Ed Kelsey will present a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation on the storied past of these theatres, which were built to expand the Broadway district Southward. The Belasco was built for drama and the Mayan for musical theatre. A restoration/renovation is currently underway at the Belasco to convert the theatre to a night club and special event venue. The Mayan was converted into a very successful night club almost 20 years ago. Working with club owner Sammy Chao, the LAHTF interceded to ensure the renovations to the Mayan were reversible.

    Science on Screen finale

    BROOKLINE, MA — The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts wraps up the 2008-2009 season of its popular Science on Screen series on Monday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. with a special program, An Evening with Ray Kurzweil. The celebrated futurist, inventor and entrepreneur will give a multi-media presentation based on his best-selling book The Singularity is Near and show a trailer of the upcoming film of the same name. Audience members will also get a sneak peek at “Transcendent Man”, director Barry Ptolemy’s documentary charting Kurzweil’s journey to bring the ideas from The Singularity is Near to a worldwide audience. A question-and-answer session with Kurzweil will follow the program.

    According to Kurzweil, the onset of the 21st century ushers in an era in which the very nature of what it means to be human will be both enriched and challenged as our species breaks the shackles of its genetic legacy and achieves inconceivable heights of intelligence, material progress, and longevity. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable, Kurzweil will present an inspiring vision of our ultimate destiny.

    Ray Kurzweil has been described as “the restless genius" by the Wall Street Journal. One of the leading inventors of our time, he has worked in a variety of areas, including music synthesis, speech and character recognition, reading technology, virtual reality and cybernetic art. All of these pioneering technologies continue today as market leaders.
