Cinema Treasures will be offline on Sunday

We’ll be taking Cinema Treasures offline during Sunday, so that we may do some scheduled maintenance on the site.

Most likely, the site will be offline between 10am and 6pm PST. If you plan to use Cinema Treasures this weekend, try to do so on Saturday.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    ‘Recent Comments’ Feature Offline

As many of you have noticed, we have temporarily removed the ‘Recent Comments’ feature from our homepage.

Unfortunately, this action was necessary because the number of comments on Cinema Treasures is growing so greatly that our database is being overwhelmed. (We’re adding approximately 5000 comments a month.) As a result, the rest of the website was sluggish or even inaccessible.

This feature will return, of course. But not until we can safely insure that the rest of Cinema Treasures will not be negatively impacted.

As always, thanks for your patience and support.

Cinema Treasures Reaches 10,000 + Theaters!!!

In less than five years, Cinema Treasures' database has grown from a small group of 125 theaters to a site that now contains over 10,000 theaters and hundreds of thousands of comments, thanks to all of your support.

Although it took roughly three years to reach 5,000, the number of listings has exploded recently, growing from roughly 6,000 a year ago to over 10,000 today and counting. (It was exactly three months ago that we announced our 9,000th theater added.)

When we first started making these incremental announcements back in 2001, we could name and thank all of our major contributors in a few lines. Today, there are (thankfully) so many of you who have dedicated your time and knowledge to building this incredible database that we can’t possibly list everyone.

However, for everyone who has ever submitted a comment, theater, or news story, or voted in our weekly poll, or if you just show up every morning for the latest news about classic movie theaters, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We won’t bore you with yet another statement about how amazed we are at the rapid growth of this site (we’ve had to switch to a dedicated server, which is already overloaded!), but let’s just say that the site is growing so fast, we were already over 10,000 when we realized it.

Thank you all for making Cinema Treasures what it is today.

    See you at 20,000!

    Cinema Treasures Adds Google Maps

We’ve upgraded our theater pages to support Google Maps.

With Google Maps, you can now view beautiful, detailed maps of your favorite theater locations. And, as of yesterday, you can also view satellite imagery of a theater.

To see a sample, take a look at Graumann’s Chinese, Ziegfeld Theater, or the Balboa Theatre.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your memories, thoughts, and histories of the world’s “Cinema Treasures,” past and present, with our growing community.

At the pace the Theatre Guide is growing, 10,000 is just around the corner …

    Member Comment Histories Will Return!

As many of you may have noticed, member profile pages on Cinema Treasures have been missing member comment histories for the past week or so.

This unfortunate bug was the unexpected result of a recent upgrade to our website. Given the size of Cinema Treasures and our limited resources, sometimes these things happen.

We are, however, working on a solution and will have this feature restored as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone who has brought this to our attention!
