Capitol Theatre makes cameo in “Semi-Pro”

FLINT, MI — The new film Semi-Pro includes scenes filmed at the Capitol Theatre, as initially reported last May. The scenes include one of the theater’s front facade indicating that the movie Mother, Jugs and Speed is showing and a scene involving Will Ferrell, playing Flint Tropics owner Jackie Moon, in a dumpster alongside the alley side of the theater talking to Woody Harrelson playing Monix, one of the players on his team. Scenes involving the theater showing a closed circuit telecast of the Mega Bowl did not make the final cut on the film, but it could appear in a future DVD release of the film.

More information can be found in the Flint Journal.

    Capitol cameo update

FLINT, MI — The Capitol Theatre marquee is now fully functioning and now every light bulb lights and moves—even the light bulbs under the marquee. The message on the marquee reads “MEGA BOWL ON CLOSED-CIRCUIT TV”. The Mega Bowl is the championship game in the film “Semi-Pro“ about an American Basketball Association basketball team called the Flint Michigan Tropics.

The theater entrance and rest of the theater building are also getting spruced up. The storefronts are getting vintage signs installed. Many of the signs are borrowed from Bob Perani’s collection from his Dort Mall. The film is scheduled to be released on February 29, 2008.

A news report (including video) from WJRT reports that the filming of scenes for “Semi-Pro” will take place at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and 3. Because the Capitol Theatre building is across Harrison Street from the Mass Transportation Authority transporation center, bus boarding and transfer locations will be moved to alternate locations for the duration of the film shoot.

    Capitol marquee makes cameo

FLINT, MI — The long neglected 1940’s vintage marquee of the Capitol Theatre, built in 1927 and designed by John Eberson, is getting a $20,000 makeover for a movie cameo in the film “Semi-Pro “. A crew from the local firm Signs by Crannie is replacing lights and wiring as well as installing a new blinking mechanism.

While the marquee and blade sign received new neon in 2004/2005, no additional work was done on the marquee until now. The blade sign got a new paint job in the 2004/2005 makeover. According to Troy Farah, whose family owns the theater building, the marquee hadn’t fully functioned since the early 1980’s at the latest.

Michael Jackson’s DVD Number ones (2nd request)

I have had another look at the DVD and I am sure the theater would have to be in the USA. The track is “You are not alone” and the theater is truly a national treasure.

    Regards once again,
    Paul

    King Kong takes Manhattan

If you haven’t seen the new King Kong film from Peter Jackson yet, you should definitely check it out. Aside from being a great movie, there are some wonderful recreations of 1930’s-era Times Square, full of bright, beautiful marquees from many, many theaters that are no longer with us.

So often, when looking at theaters from the past, we’re only able to catch but a glimpse of a facade, a marquee, or a gorgeous auditorium. A theater can only be experienced in bits and pieces. But, with Kong, we get to walk through a grand movie palace, a shabby off-Broadway vaudeville theater, and the big, bright lights of Times Square. For theater fans, it’s pure magic.

(And, by the way, we can now reveal that WETA, the visual effects firm who created Kong’s effects, asked Cinema Treasures for assistance in making the film’s virtual movie theaters look as realistic as possible. Frankly, we helped out in a very small way, but it’s wonderful to see WETA’s committment to getting it right.)

Help finding a theater from the film ‘Village of the Giants’

    Hello,

I operate a fanpage to the 1965 film ‘Village of the Giants.’ I have been compiling all sorts of trivia and such on this film since February, but there’s one setting that is proving truly enigmatic. During part of the film, there’s an interior of a theater. The imges of the seating and theater deco interior can be found here.

This was shot somewhere in California, and the tassles over the girl’s head are from something draped over a balcony-like area where the camera is set up. There isn’t that much information to go off of, but I kind of think this could have been a community theater somewhere in LA or Hollywood (the main segments of the film were shot at the WB Ranch and Universal Studios).

If anyone can help, It’d be greatly appreciated, and I will acknowledge your help on my site.
