The Regal Theatre is one out of a few theatres that serve Gatesville, opening as early as 1917, although the opening date has not yet to be found at this time.

Throughout time, the Regal Theatre became the only indoor movie house in Gatesville following the closures of both the Palace Theatre and Ritz Theatre.

In November 1953, the management installed a new giant curved screen that was twice as large as the one that was used since its opening. They would eventually replace it by CinemaScope a few months later.

The Regal Theatre closed its doors for the final time on June 13, 1965 with Michael Gough in “Black Zoo”. It was remodeled a short time later but it only lasted for a few months. Shortly afterward, it was demolished the following year, leaving the then-newly-renamed Town & Country Indoor & Outdoor Theatre (formerly known as the Circle-S Drive-In and now known as the Last Picture Show Drive-In) the only movie theater operating in Gatesville.

This item is from the July 21, 1931 issue of Motion Picture Times:

“L. B. Brown of Gatesville, Tex. is advertising his Regal and Ritz theatres for sale. Brown has a mighty pretty proposition. He has been in Gatesville over ten years and wants to make a change. His holdings in the Rio Grande Valley have his eye. ‘You’ve got to advertise if you want to get attention,’ he says, and he backs up the statement with a display advertisement in this issue.”
An earlier mention of the Regal appears in the December 1, 1917 issue of Moving Picture World:
“Chris Ressing, of of the Regal, Gatesville, will move into his new house about Dec. 1. The new place will be very unique and is being planned with a view of giving Gatesville one of the most modern picture play houses in Texas.”
