The State Theatre was opened March 2, 1926 with Wallace Beery in “Behind the Front”. It was operated by the Finkelstein & Ruben chain. It was equipped with a Wultizer organ. F&R were taken over by Publix in 1929 and they were merged with Paramount Pictures Inc. by 1933 through their subsidiary John Friedl.
On October 8, 2016 the Cinema Falls organisation held the first film event in the theatre in over 30 years, with all revenue donated to the theatre for the event. Silent movies were shown, with music by the Alloy Orchestra. Renovations continued and the State Theatre reopened on November 27, 2020. On December 11, 2020 the first movie to be shown since the reopening was Bing Crosby in “White Chtistmas”.

The State Theater received a facade easement and is now nearly as beautiful as it was when first built in 1926. The Marquee, though not original to the theater has be revamped and is beautiful. Currently we are waiting to find out if the Sioux Falls State Theater group will be granted the opportunity by the owners to turn this gem back into a first-run movie house.
