Avalon to return with new marquee
MILWAUKEE, WI — Not only is the Avalon Theater set to reopen this summer but they plan to install a 24-foot marquee. It’s not exactly a replica but at least it keeps with the vintage style they’re trying to maintain all around the property.
An exciting development for a theatre shuttered since 2000 and one that would have made Jim Rankin happy.

Santa Monica to get two ArcLights
SANTA MONICA, CA — Westside moviegoers rejoiced the other month with the announcement of a new Arclight Cinemas at Santa Monica Place. One just wasn’t enough though as there are now plans for a second ArcLight just blocks away.
While this will drastically improve the moviegoing options for the area, will it be yet another serious blow to nearby single screens like the Regency Village?

Aztec Theatre returns to happy crowds
ALBANY, TX — Locals enthusiastically welcomed back the Aztec Theatre last week after almost 40 years of not showing films. The theatre went through a deep restoration and even has a new projector.

Eckles and Warner announce theatre progress
NEW CASTLE, PA — David Esposito, Principal and Project Manager of Eckles Architects and Engineering, and Jerry Kern, President of of the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre (formerly Warner Film Center), today announced that their companies have entered into an agreement to develop final architectural drawings and specifications for the reconstruction of the historic Warner Cascade Theatre at 18 S. Mill Street, downtown New Castle.
Eckles Project Manager Mark Scheller will take charge of the project, which consists of recreating the original nickelodeon auditoriums that comprised the Cascade Theatre, using original drawings of the building from Eckels’ archives along with photographs and even the memories of individuals who remember the Warners’ first theatre.

Summit Place (former Pontiac Mall) Cinemas demolished
WATERFORD, MI – The long abandoned three-screen Summit Place Cinemas was demolished under orders from Waterford Township as it has been determined to be unsafe. Built by General Cinemas as the Pontiac Mall twin cinema, one of its auditoriums was carved making the theater a triple. It was sold to National Amusements in 1983. Renamed the Summit Place Cinemas after the Pontiac Mall was renamed Summit Place, it sat vacant for more than 20 years before it was ordered demolished.

Uptown endangered for the fourth time
CHICAGO, IL — The Uptown Theatre, 4816 N. Broadway, has been named to Landmarks Illinois' annual Ten Most Endangered Historic Places list, which was announced today, Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at a press conference in Springfield.

4-D movies coming to L.A.
LOS ANGELES, CA — Regal LA Live will be the first theatre in the country to provide a 4-D experience. CJ Group announced the technology two years ago but has struggled to find distribution since. There is no word yet on how much a screening will cost but if it’s successful, expect to see it soon at a theater near you.

Marcus Theatres is selling more than just tickets thanks to their relationship with NCR Corporation. The company’s technology facilitates to-go orders on concessions and even analyzes ticket sales to advise on marketing decisions.

Will the dome open once more?
SAN JOSE, CA — Fans came out in droves last Sunday for the final screening at the Century 21. The famous domed theatre is supposed to be torn down but there’s still some hope left it will have a future.

Boyd Theatre settlement reached
PHILADELPHIA, PA — The 12 year battle for the Boyd is lost so the preservationists entered into a settlement agreement for what they could save before all but the facade is demolished.
Certainly a sad end for this story but the Friends of the Boyd should be applauded for all their years of dedication to saving this treasure. At least a small portion will be preserved for future generations.
