Regency acquires Bruin, Westwood Village cinemas

LOS ANGELES, CA — After so many heartbreaking theater losses in Westwood Village the past few years, it looked like the worst case scenario was about to occur as Mann Theatres' final leases in the neighborhood were about to run out. That was until Regency Theatres announced yesterday that as of tomorrow, they will be operating the Village and Bruin theatres.

Regency’s show of faith is good news for standalone theaters, and could spark interest in other historic venues, including the for-sale Grauman’s Chinese.

Regency entered long-term leasing negotiations with the theater’s local owners at the beginning of the year, after previous operators Mann Theaters decided last year not to renew its leases.

Great news and now one thing to remember, go and see a movie at these theaters. Regency isn’t going to keep them open if they aren’t profitable.

OK, so I go to Westwood to see a movie there. How much do I pay for parking? Have the merchants made it any easier to get in and out without getting gouged? Years ago you could park behind the Federal Building on Wilshire for free and walk to the village. What happened to that?

I’m not being churlish, but I’m a typical LA moviegoer. Westwood is not really an attraction unless you’re going to UCLA.

Is there some reason you can’t still park at the Federal Building for free? Do they charge now?

I thought they got rid of that after 9/11.

Have you looked into the City operated parking structure at 1036 Broxton Ave. between Weyburn Ave & Kinross? When we last parked there on a Saturday morning (fall 2009), the first 2 hours were free—(no validation required)—I don’t recall how much after the first two hours. Entry after 6 PM, I read somewhere online, is a flat $3 charge to park there. The parking structure is in the middle of the block—that block is one-way going south—check the map or look at the Google maps street view. This parking structure is about a half block or less from the Bruin and the Village Theaters! If you can’t take the bus, and must drive this is the place to try to park.
If you park there, give us feedback and an update of any changes.

Regency Bruin and Village… That doesn’t sound right.

Uptown TheaterVW: I always park there (when I can’t find street parking) when I’m in Westwood. All the fussin & moaning about parking on the Village & Bruin pages never made since to me. $3 is reasonable. I pay that much at AMC Century City, Grauman’s Chinese and even the mighty Arclight! Heck…it’s more expensiver parking at THE GROVE than it is to park in Westwood!

This is really a big thing for Regency Theatres. These theatres are still presigte theatres and have made Regency a major player as an exhibitor. They are primed and ready to go. Hopefully the almost loss of these theatres will prompt some action to bring Westwood back into the fold.

Regency Village and Regency Bruin sound just fine to me. It’ll certainly look better on a marquee than:
“Theater Closed- Thank you for you patronage.”

True. Hopefully they’ll actually play something worth driving to scary Westwood to see.

Los Angelinos whining about parking is getting so old. They can’t walk a few blocks from a parking space that might not be right in front of the theatre. As with the Fairfax, I don’t get it. I’ve always found a parking spot on a side street. Having gone to the New Beverly last night, there were plenty of spots near the theatre.
Quit all the whining about parking.
to CliffStephenson: your point is absolutely true. Even worse: “Opening soon – American Apparel”

Hey Mann’s… Why don’t you get get completely out of the movie business and open up a chain of nail parlors? We really need one next to every Starbucks on each block!

And more power to Regency. I applaud your excellence in this cinematic business and will always support the single screen houses. And don’t forget the curtains -PLEASE!
