This started life originally as the Tsukaguchi Theater, opening on December 28, 1953 with three screens under the auditorium names “First”, “Second”, and “Third”. However, the “First” auditorium was later renamed “Tsukaguchi Toei” and became a sealing hall for the Toei chain. After almost 25 years on the job, the Tsukaguchi Theater closed in 1977 because of an urban redevelopment project that also led to the opening of a newer theater called the “Tsukaguchi Sun Sun Theater”.
The Tsukaguchi Sun Sun Theater, also a triplex, opened its doors the following year on July 7, 1978, and opened on the same day as the Tsukaguchi-san Town, a commercial complex in the heart of Amagasaki, and housed a total of 518 seats. All three auditoriums went under the names “Tsukaguchi Sun Sun Theater”, “Tsukaguchi Cinema”, and “Tsukaguchi Romance”.
As of the 1980’s, the Sun Sun auditorium (or as I called it Screen 1) screens a mix of Shochiku and foreign films housing a total of 200 seats located on the first floor of the rebar structure. The Cinema auditorium (or Screen 2) screens Toei with 170 seats in the reinforced steel basement, and the Romance (Screen 3) shows a mix of American films and sometimes adult movies. A fourth screen was later added in its later years.
Toho moved to the Tsukaguchi Sun Sun Theater on April 11, 1994 following the closure of the nearby Amagasaki Toho Theater (formerly the Amagasaki Central Theater) the previous day after almost 40 years of operation, and later in January 1995 survived the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake completely without receiving any damage at all. During this time, it was a sealing hall of Toho and Shochiku, but since the fall of 2011, mini-theater works were also screened at occasions.
As of 2026, the theater shows a mix of first-run, second-run, foreign, independent, niche, indie, and classic movies as well as special events and special screenings all mixed in like a blender completely in four auditoriums. Within a total of 484 seats, Screen 1 housed 47 seats with Dolby sound installations, Screen 2 housed 117 seats with SRD (subwoofer) installations, Screen 3 housed 165 seats with SRD sound, and Screen 4 housed 155 seats with SRD (bass woofer) sound.
