The Senri Selsey Theater opened its doors on November 15, 1972 with Nigel Davenport in “Living Free”. This theater opened alongside the entirety of Senri Sercy, a shopping complex that served as the core of Senri Chuo Station. The theater itself was located in the basement, among other restaurants and other establishments across from a pachinko parlor.
Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, Toyonaka City had seven other movie theaters nearby including the area’s Shochiku, Toho, and Toei theaters, but many of which closed one-by-one during the 1990’s, and this one remained the last operating.
The theater once closed in June 2001, but reopened in September of the same year under a new owner. Unfortunately it was unknown if the theater itself reopened with new ownership before or after 9/11. Hideaki Hirano, a personality on the ABC Radio 1008 (Asahi Broadcasting Corporation) program “ABC Acid Cinema,” once managed as a theater operator for a day on an irregular basis in 2003.
Unfortunately, due to declining attendance numbers and the heavy burden of the digital cinema transition, the theater closed for the final time on August 31, 2014.
