Situated in Dundee, the Wellgate Shopping Centre comprises two shopping floors and a third containing a food court, gym and the Central Library. Construction had begun in 1974; the Centre opened on 4th April 1978.
When it had first been planned, a regional film theatre was to be located in the Library. Known as the Steps Theatre, this had its gala opening on 23rd April 1979, when invited guests attended a screening of “The Goodbye Girl”, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason.
The first public screening, “Julia”, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Fonda, soon followed on 28th April 1979.
The theatre’s tenth anniversary was celebrated by a screening of “Madame Sousatzka”, starring Shirley MacLaine, and an exhibition, ‘Dundee at the Pictures’.
However, the imminent opening of the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) in March 1999 resulted in the Steps Theatre closing for regular film screenings on 20th December 1998. It bowed out in fine style with cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.
Fortunately, the Steps Theatre continues to be used for a wide variety of events, including monthly ‘Secret Cinema’ screenings (the titles are advertised in advance!) using DVD/Blu-ray projection.
