La Scala Cinema

The La Scala Cinema was the first pupose-built cinema to be opened in Dundee. It opened on 9th December 1913 with “Moths” The cinema had a narrow facade, which consisted of a large square tower clad in white fiance tiles, and topped by a huge golden globe. The screen was at the front of the building, so patrons entered the auditorium on each side of the screen, then walked away from it to reach their seats.

The La Scala Cinema was never operated by a major chain, and gradually became a second run city centre house. It was closed on 1st May 1965 and was acquired by Woolworth’s to extend their already existing store. By July 2008 it had been demolished and shop occupied by Phone4U stood on the site.
