On 5th January 1952, the Mourne Observer carried some exciting news for the residents of Rostrevor village. An application by local businessman George Tinnelly to grant a seven-day licence for a cinema in Rostrevor had been successful. Later that year, the Aurora Cinema opened for business in a converted Nissan hut which had been used in World War II. The hut was large and spacious, capable of accommodating an audience of 300 or more, and located in George Tinnelly’s garden on the Shore Road. The first film shown was “Knock on Any Door” (1949) starring Humphrey Bogart.
Six years on, the hut was replaced by a purpose-built cinema next door. The seating was on 3 levels which included a middle auditorium and a balcony. The opening film was “April Love” (1958) starring Pat Boone. The Aurora Cinema closed during the mid-1980’s.
The Aurora Cinema never made it to the listings in any editions of Kine Year Books.
