Canton 7 GDX

Opened as Canton 6 in 1985. It had a renovation in 2004 to include stadium seating, a new screen and exterior and interior changes to better compete with the new 20 screen multiplex that is being built a few miles from the theater. The theater was then renamed Canton 7 GDX. It closed on May 9, 2019.

There is a new multiplex that is currently being built, I believe it will have 20 screens. Canton 6 planned to keep people in by adding the extra screen, stadium seating, and redoing the iterior and exterior.

It has happened, and it is now the Canton 7.

Wasn’t this built by General Cinema?

It was a General Cinema

Well, it’s Feb 2007 and the Canton Cinemas is absolutely thriving! I do not like the Emagine Megaplex nor do dozens of others I know. Emagine is way too big, way over-priced ($50-$60 for a family of 4 to see a show with refreshments) and nothing but an obnoxious teenie-bopper hangout.

I remember the guy building the Emagine quoting in the paper “Well I just assumed the Canton 6 would go out of business after I opened” (Nice guy, huh)?

Well sorry Mr. Megaplex. People like the hometown friendliness, the great price ($3.00, 95% of the time and always $3 for students, kids and seniors) and the newspaper coupons ($1.50 for drink and popcorn). The owner and the staff are great at Canton Cinemas. The redecorating and stadium seating are awesome too.

Way to go Goodrich Canton 7! I’m there every time!

I understand the Emagine Canton has lowered their prices below the Canton 7

The Canton Cinema still continues to thrive today, despite competition from the nearby Emagine Theater east on Ford Road and the MJR Westland Grand Digital 16 a few miles further east on Wayne Road just north of Ford Road.

The “GDX” stands for Giant Digital Experience, Bob Goodrich’s take on large formatting 4K projection with Dolby Atmos. The theater offers 3 box office lines, one self serve ticketing kiosk, and 6 concession lines. Auditoriums 1, 2, 6, and 7 have approximately 115 seats. Auditoriums 3 and 5 have about 200 seats, and auditorium 4 (The GDX one) has about 290 seats. In addition, the theater has a party room. Auditorium 4 is currently under construction to include reserved seating and a floating screen. Auditorium 4 was added in 2004 along with a party room and a second women’s room.

Goodrich made the decision to remove the box office about two years ago in an attempt to make the lobby appear spacious like the neighboring Emagine’s lobby. Tickets & concessions were then to both be sold at the concession stand. Traffic continued to slump until Goodrich matched the neighboring Emagine’s $5 matinee shows, which, until then, cost $7 at a smaller, mustier venue.
