Gaiety Theatre

The New Gaiety Theatre opened on November 23, 1917 in a building which had combined the Unique Theatre and Gaiety Theatre. The opening movie was Mary Pickford in “The Little American”. It was gutted by a fire on early morning May 27, 1939. It was rebuilt larger than its predecessor and reopened on September 18, 1939 with Mickey Rooney in “Andy Hardy gets Spring Fever”. It continued in operation to at least 1969.

An earlier Gaiety Theatre had operated at another location in Fredericton from 1913 to 1917.

This photo of Queen Street dated 1962 shows the entrance of the Gaiety at left.

This web page has a closeup of the Gaiety’s entrance, undated, as well as photos of the Gem and Capitol Theatres, two houses that sequentially occupied a site at the corner of King and Carleton Streets.

1969 photo of concession counter & Mrs. Boone added, credit (PANB), via Jim Murray. Which means it was open at least until then.
