The Teatro Nacional Sao Joao was built as an opera house style theatre, with seating in orchestra, the dress circle contained 20 private boxes and a Royal box, the 2nd circle contained seating and 14 private boxes, and there was a seated gallery on top. It was converted into the Sao Joao Cine in 1933. It was still operating as a cinema in 1950. It has now become a live theatre again.
