In Newport-on-Tay, Fife, across the Firth of Tay from Dundee, the Rio Cinema is thought to have opened in the 1930’s (it was not listed in the 1931, 1934 or 1937 Kinematograph Year Book’s).
It was also not listed in the 1940 or 1944, 1947 or 1948 editions. The 1953 edition listed the owner as The Angus Cinema Company, of Carnoustie.
The Rio Cinema closed in 1968. The building was converted into a furniture store. That closed in 1969 and the Wormit and Newport youth club moved in.
In 1972 this was renamed the Rio Youth club.
More recently, the building has become home to the Rio Community Centre.
