The People’s Palace was opened in January 1893, and was the first building in Dundee to screen moving pictures when Paul’s Animatograph was used on 8th July 1896. In 1909 it was re-named the Picture Palace. On 14th November 1918 it was re-named Savoy Picture House and presented films and variety.
On 8th December 1924 it was re-named Palace Cinema beginning with a screening of Rudolph Valentino in “Blood and Sand. It became a live variety theatre in 1938, operating as the Palace Theatre. This continued until 1965 when it was re-named Theatre Royal.
The Theatre Royal closed in 1968, but was used occasionally for amateur shows. It was destroyed by fire on 12th October 1977 and the remains were demolished. The site is now a car park for the nearby Queens Hotel.
