The Liberty Theater started out as a Vaudeville house catering primarily to a Jewish clientele. This photograph was probably taken in the fall of 1914. One of the films being shown was “Bronco Billy’s Wild Ride” which was released on August 22, 1914.
Interesting to note, on the marquee the word is spelled “THEATER” while on the illuminated hanging sign it’s “THEATRE”. The Liberty Theater was still listed as open in 1931, but had closed by 1932.

It would have been demolished along with the rest of the block to make way for the city’s housing development in 1934. And then again for the freeway entrance lane that exists there now.
There’s a number of theory’s as to the proper use of Theater versus Theatre. I once heard the explanation that a Theater is a house with a fixed point or address, whereas theatre refers to a travelling troupe.
