The Rapids Drive-In opened July 31, 1952 with Ronald Reagan in “Louisa” & “Italian Interlude”. It was initially operated by Black Hills Amusement Co. It was closed in 1957. The drive-in was renamed the Pines Drive-In when it reopened March 31, 1961. In 1969 the drive-in was operated by Commonwealth Amusement Co. until its closing in 1986.

Sturgis Rd is also Hwy 79. The drive-in was in the southeast corner of the intersection. The site is now a large man-made lake/drainage pond.

This opened as the Rapids Drive-In on July 31st, 1952 and closed down at the end of the 1957 season. It reopened as the Pines Drive-In on March 31st, 1961. Both grand opening ads in the photo section.
Last season: 1986.

Motion Picture Herald, July 31, 1954: “Hundred mile-an-hour wind blew down and demolished the screen tower at the Rapid, Rapid City, S. D., owned by the Black Hills Amusement Co.”
Reopened as the Pines Drive-in on 31/3/1961 with “Man of the west” and “Run for the sun”.
Boxoffice, Aug. 14, 1954: “High winds wrecked the 70-foot screen at the Rapid Drive-In, lifting it from its foundation and tossing it 150 feet into an adjoining corn field. Richard Klein, general manager of the Black Hills Amusement Co., operator of the airer, estimated damages at $10,000.”
