Commonwealth Circuit announced its triplex cinema inside the Rushmore Mall would open three months after the September 20, 1978 grand opening of the mall. Delayed, the Rushmore 3 opened on March 15, 1979 with “Ice Castles”, “The Great Train Robbery”, and the animated “Lord of the Rings”.
In 1987, an eight-screen multiplex was announced to be constructed which would likely lead to the end of the interior mall theatre. Under United Artists operation, the Rushmore 3 would close on January 6, 1991 after showings of “Look Who’s Talking Too”, “Misery”, and “Almost an Angel”. The mall retrofitted the space for a food court. The outdoor cinema was launched as a 7-screen facility.
