A.J. Beszant’s ambition was to build a large de luxe theatre in each of Sydney’s key western suburbs. His Civic Theatre in the suburb of Auburn was the prototype - an imposing, luxurious theatre designed by architects Kaberry and Chard whose signature style involved much detailed filigree work.
The Crescent Theatre in the Sydney suburb of Fairfield at the corner of The Crescent & Court Road, was opened on 10th December 1934 with Jack Buchanan in “That’s A Good Girl” and Jack Holt in “The Defence Rests”
The theatre became Hoyts Crescent in 1944 when Beszant merged his company, Western Suburbs Cinemas Ltd. with the national Hoyts organization. It was closed on 26th July 1967.
The building survived several decades as a furniture store with the facade covered over. In October 2016 the auditorium was demolished, and plans are to restore the facade as an entrance to the home units built on the site.

My only visit to this theatre was to see ‘Summer Holiday'with my school mate.
Going by Google streetview it seems to have been gutted if not demolished completely. It was subdivided into two levels in the 1970’s with the upstairs becoming a Roller-rink and downstairs an amusement arcade. After the rink closed it became a furniture store and stayed that way for many years. A sad loss.
Great Cinema when I was a kid,last film I saw there was Jack the giant killer!!! now being demolished for home units but happily the facade is to be kept and restored to the original and to be called the Crescent with the original neon sign on top., It is eerie seeing it at the moment as I hadnt seen the original facade in almost 50 years.
