Bass Hill Drive-In

Located at the corner of Arundal Road and Johnston Road. The Skyline Drive-In opened as a single screen drive-in on 13th November 1956 with an (Invite only) screening of “The Last Wagon” starring Richard Widmark. It was the first drive-in theatre to operate in New South Wales. It later became a twin with a capacity for 724 cars. The Bass Hill Drive-In was Australia’s oldest continually operating drive-in theatre.

It was operated by Greater Union/Birch, Carroll & Coyle who closed it on 31st October 2007 and it was immediately demolished. Housing has been built on the site.

The Bass Hill Drive-in was demolished(after trying to heritage list the site!) in October 2007. The site has been turned into a development site(housing estate?).

Bass Hill Drive-in in the early 80’s..ahh. P plates on the Monaro, girlfriend in the back seat etc etc. In its early days it had a playground down near the screen which even ran a small ride-on train. I can still smell the chips from the cafeteria now…
