Located out of the town centre on Peel House Lane at the corners of Allerton Road and Mount Street. The Plaza Cinema was opened in October 1937 with George Formby in "Feather Your Nest". Designed by Warrington based architects William & Seager Owen in a splendid Art Deco style. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels. The proscenium was 45 feet wide. It was operated by the Cheshire County Cinemas chain.
The Plaza Cinema was closed on 8th March 1970 with Madeleine Hinde in “The Smashing Bird I Used to Know” (aka School for Unclaimed Girls) & Dennis Weaver in “Mission Batangas”. It was converted into a bingo club which opened on 26th March 1970. The Bingo club, last operated by Apollo Bingo, was closed on 28th November 1998. The building was virtually unaltered from the day it opened.
In March 2003, it re-opened as the Peelhouse Medical Plaza, a health centre for the local council. The exterior is still the same, but presumably the building has been totally gutted internally.

That is one bleak, forbiding looking building. It’s appropriate that it’s now a medical center since it looks very institutional, unfortunately MENTAL institutional.
The Plaza closed as a cinema on Saturday March 8th 1970 and was converted for bingo, re-opening on Thursday March 26th 1970. At the same time the bingo club at the former Regal closed, the owners having transferred the operation to the larger premises.
