Campus Theatre

The Campus Theatre was constructed in 1949 as the Southwest’s premiere movie theatre for Denton, Texas. Over 30 tons of steel was used to construct the movie theatre and it cost over half a million dollars to build. It was opened October 4, 1949 with Cary Grant in “I Was a Male War Bride”. It had 1,370-seats and was equipped with a Hammond electric organ which was opened by organist Norma Ballard.

Numerous movie stars have visited the Campus Theatre from John Wayne to Warren Beatty who appeared at the Campus Theatre when “Bonnie and Clyde” premiered here in 1967. It closed as a movie theatre in 1985, last operated by Plitt.

Vacant for 5-years, it reopened as a live theatre in 1990. Today, it is a performing arts facility. Over 32,000 visitors come each year to see live performances at the Campus Theatre.

The Campus originally housed 1,350 seats when it opened, marking it one of the largest small-town movie houses in all of Texas at the time.

Closed as a movie theater by Plitt in March 1985 because of a business lack. ABC Interstate was also one of its previous operators before being taken over by Plitt in 1978.
