Towne Theatre

Located on N. 6th Street at the corner of W. Gordon Street. The Lotus Theatre was opened December 25, 1920. In 1922 it was equipped with a Mueller organ. It became the Towne Theatre on November 16, 1931. It was renovated in December 1954. In 1969 it become an adult cinema which closed in May 1978.

In July 1983 the building was converted into 14-apartments.

The Towne became a porn theater also in the 1960s…. It was either closed down or went out of business when porn became available on VHS about 1978/79 and in the early 80s the new owners did a gut renovation of the building, tearing out everything except the outside.

Today it’s an apartment building and you enter the property thoug a door that was a side fire door when it was a theater. But if you know what it looked like, you still can see where the front entrance was as the 2d and 3d floor looks the same…

This opened as the Lotus theatre on December 25th, 1920 and reopened as Towne on November 16th, 1931. renovated and reopened on December 28th, 1954. Three grand opening ads can be found in the photo section
