THE Skyway Drive-in parked 566 cars in Erie making it the largest Drive in in the late 50’s. It was owned by Co-Op.They owned several Drive ins in that state.
The Skyway Drive-in was the nicest drive-in theater in Erie. It was located on West Lake Road. This theater was not far from The Peninsula Drive-in the newest drive-in with dual screens. Which was located across from Waldameer Amusement Park.Other nearby theaters were The Star Drive-in on 12th Street near Pittsburgh Ave, Cinema World with 4 screens on Pittsburgh Ave an indoor theater near 15th Street and Dipson’s Plaza on West 8th Street near Pittsburgh Ave.This too being an indoor unit.
The address and map shown here are for the Lakeview Drive-In. Approximate address for the Skyway is 5150 West Lake Rd. Erie, PA. 16505. The site is now occupied by Wolf Run Village condominiums
Skyway opened in 1945 and by 1980 it was closed down. From 1955 until 1964, Skyway went by the name of Country View Drive-In. List of owners: Dipson Circuit 1955-1969 Cinemette Corporation of America 1975-1980
opened or placed its first ad on June 6th, 1941. Grand opening ad posted.
So this is probably the first drive-in theater in Erie.
Closed 1984 by Cinemette.
