The Drive-In opened on June 6, 1940 with Cary Grant in “His Girl Friday”. It was located on Sand Bar Ferry Road. Like the Skyview Drive-In, both were in the city limits in mainly urban areas.
Later, competition came from the beautiful Hilltop Drive-In which was right across the river in North Augusta. By 1955, it was known as the Augusta Drive-In and was operated by the Georgia Theatre Company. By 1956 it was closed.
In 1953 it played on a March night "Pick-up"
with Beverly Michaels and Hugo Haas. With a star studded cast like that is there anyway it could survive? The second feature was "Fighting Westerner" with Ann Sheridan. And of course there was a color cartoon. They showed the main feature at 6:30 and 9:46. The second feature played at 8:31 only.
I visited the lot years ago. It was so overgrown that I was afraid of snake bite, plus the hood where we were parked we worried if we would still have cars when we got back. You could still see part of the screen which was located close to the Savannah River.

Well, June 8 1957 it was surprize night no titles listed in the paper!Show starts at Dusk.Always a cartoon.
In the early 1950’s I talked my mom into taking me to a midnight double horror show at the Augusta Drive-In, my first ever. The features were two old 1930’s Universal horror re-releases, “The Raven” and “Dracula’s Daughter”. It rained through most of it. Why can I remember that in such detail, but I can’t remember what I went to the store for this morning?

Not that it really matters a whole lot but the above address is for the adjacent property to where the drive in was. 527 Sand Bar Ferry Rd, Augusta, GA 30901 is actually where the theater was, and I cannot see any trace of anything left either aerial wise or Street View, and the Google car went down the street that was behind the screen when it was standing.
doesn’t mater where the address is in my book because the screen is gone!
