Located on the south side of Hackney Road at the corner of St. Peter’s Street in the east London inner city district of Haggerston/South Hackney. The Hackney Grand Central Theatre was opened in December 1912. It was a conversion (by architect Frank Matcham) of the former Adelphi Chapel. Seating was provided for 347 in the stalls and 156 in the circle.
In 1930, it was taken over by local exhibitor George Smart. Still open in 1939, it was closed in 1940, with the owner going bankrupt and a casualty of World War II conditions.
The building survived unused until it was demolished on 28th December 1971 when it was demolished. Today, housing named Hadrian Estate has been built on the site.
