The AMC The Grand 24 Theatres opened May 19, 1995 with a total seating capacity for 4,900 in its 24 screens. It was the first megaplex theatre built in the United States. It holds several attendance records many that are unattainable now. In its first year of operation, it drew 2.8 million people. It also holds the highest single day attendance of over 21,000 people.

Today its location and the presence of other theatres nearby have pulled its attendance down significantly, but it’s still a nice theatre to still see movies at without the crowds.

AMC closed the Grand 24 on October 31, 2010, after letting the 15 years lease lapse. It was reopened on October 14, 2011 by Southern Theatres, with 14 screens. It was closed again August 30, 2013.

Taken over by Studio Movie Grill, it was renovated to the plans of architectural firm NCA Partners and reopened on December 16, 2013 with 3,100-seats. It was closed on March 15, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It reopened on August 28, 2020 until January 18, 2021. On that date it was announced that Studio Movie Grill had gone out of business and the closure would be permanent. It was taken over by Look Dine-In Cinemas and reopened on June 11, 2021. It was closed on September 2, 2024.

It was taken over by a church in June 2026 who plan to begin demolition, and build a new church beginning in late-November 2026.

That is the 3rd time this theater closed well there is always the AMC Northpark 15 and Cinemark 17 since I have to say are better theatres since I don’t see the point of The Grand being opened again since Northpark and Cinemark 17 both have IMAX (Northpark has IMAX Laser) and Northpark has Dolby Cinema.

And there’s another thing the theater is not on the website.

Closed along with the rest of the chain on March 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened August 28, 2020 but was closed permanently January 18, 2021 not long after Studio Movie Grill declared bankruptcy.

Looks like LOOK Cinemas is taking over. No real information is provided from their website.

Fast-growing Dallas church pushing ahead on $30M new building The former movie theater property will house thousands of congregants. By Kaitlin Bain, Deputy Managing Editor, News and Sports June 14, 2026

One of Dallas' fastest-growing churches has taken a huge step toward its $30 million new home. Social Dallas earlier this summer began interior demolition of an existing building in northwest Dallas to make way for the new facility. And now, they appear to have a date for the next step.

“This isn’t just about tearing something down. It’s about making room for what God is building right here in our city,” Pastor Robert Madu Jr. wrote earlier this week in an Instagram post about the demo. Church officials could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. “The area God has called us to has carried many stories over the years. Some marked by hardship. Some marked by pain. But we believe God is writing a new story, and hope is on the way!”

According to the Texas Department of Licensing Registration, the construction step is expected to begin in late November 2026, with work lasting until February 2028. The work will include renovation of 111,840 square feet of exterior facade, and installation of a 2,300-seat auditorium, classrooms, auxiliary theaters, lobby, cafe and “support space,” according to TDLR.

The property at 10110 E. Technology Blvd. previously operated as a movie theater across multiple brands—AMC and Studio Movie Grill, among others.

If full regularly, the auditorium will accommodate enough worshipers to give Social Dallas “megachurch” status, according to megachurch characteristics put forth by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.

However, it appears the church still has work to do before it can begin construction. The church’s website shows it’s raised just over $3.8 million toward the $6 million fundraising goal.

“We are so grateful for every person who has prayed, served, given, and believed alongside us. Because of your faithfulness, we’re one step closer to seeing this vision become a reality,” Pastor Robert Madu said in a Tuesday video updating on video progress. “We still have ground to cover, but we’re confident that God is able to do immeasurably more than we could ask, think, or imagine."Since its founding as "Social Girls” in 2018, expansion to “Social Night” in 2019 and its official launch as a church in April 2021, Social Dallas has met as a mobile church without a permanent building, worshiping in The Hall on Dragon, Fair Park Embaracadero, the Winspear Opera House and others.

“We’re not just building a building. We’re changing a city,” the Instagram post concluded. “God loves Dallas.”
