- Mar 12, 2010 — New Programming Format at Joy Cinema
The Joy Theatre was opened in 1939.
In June 2012, it was taken over by Jeff ‘Punk Rock’ Martin and was renamed Joy Theatre & Pub. There have been some renovations done to the lobby area. The cinema now serves beer as well as pizza and screens a mix of blockbuster movies, family films and late-night ‘oddities’.

The Joy Theatre is listed in the 1941 edition of Film Daily Yearbook, but no seating capacity is given. In the 1950 edition of Film Daily Yearbook is is listed with a seating capacity of 485.
I found the JOY to be alive and well in 2003.

Recently visited this theatre while in Portland area. A wonderful throwback to the 40s and 50s, a single screen theatre that seems to be a one man operation. Lobby may have been remodeled but the house itself was like stepping back in time, complete with bad acoustics and uneven masking. What more can a nostalgic theatre fan want?
What’s happening at the Joy?
While shopping nearby a few weeks back I saw a freshly painted exterior but a blank marquee and no lights on.
Someone told me the Joy may have changed ownership before or after being remodeled late last year and they had acquired the vacant store next door converting into a snack shop plus bar.
Further more, the new format has changed to “Bollywood” flicks. I’m not to sure that the region would fully support this.
With no answers to my above question, I returned to look the place over and was pleased to see the Joy is OPAEN again but their info-to-know is under the same phone but under www.roxiecinema.com
I noted their programming is now a mixture of first run English speaking films with some “Bollywood” titles as well.
However, the adjacent next door eatery, which was accessible from the Joy’s lobby, is now vacant and been boarded up.
A neighbor told me the most recent manager was no longer there and he was devastated at loosing the job in a place he loved.
Joy Cinema is currently screening Indian, mostly Bollywood, movies. The schedule seems to be posted on Friday most of the time at: http://www.roxycinema.com/Portland_main.htm
It would be nice to have more advance notice, but I guess you take what you can get.
They screen 35mm prints. The projection is almost always good; well framed and with quick focus corrections when needed.
I believe there is a five ticket minimum to run the film so if you go on a slow night there’s a chance you might get a refund and no film.
The satellite view of the Joy Cinema shows that the building tapers toward the screen end of the auditorium, as does the auditorium of the Tigard Theatre as seen in the Boxoffice photo Tinseltoes linked to. They probably are the same theater. The Tigard Theatre was designed by Portland architect James W. DeYoung.

The Joy is alive and well, but for how long!???! I’ve been going to the joy now for over a year and a half Weird Wednesday if the highlight of my week. But the theater’s rent has been raised. To compete in this growing industry of multiplex’s and digital projection, the joy is the only theater independently owned that can show 3D films. To help raise money the theater has started an Indie go go campaign.

Let’s not let a historic theater, an important fixture of the community and a place where a family can see a movie and not hit the bank account too hard.
If you’re free Wednesday for Weird Wednesday, come on out! If you’re down for a bad movie to laugh at with your friends and have a beer. Come one out! It’s less hipster then the Hollywood or Laurelhurst…so that’s a plus.
