The Lamp, May 2011

Originally on this site was the Grand Theatre (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The Lamp Theatre was opened in 1937. It closed in the mid-2000’s. It was sold and the new owners began renovating to reopen, sadly by 2010, this had come to a halt.

It received grants from the State & County and with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers it reopened in the fall of 2015. The stage has been enlarged and can now hold live performances as well as movies.

There is new activity for this theatre. The Westmoreland Cultural Trust is still trying to renovate and open it. State and County money has been arranged, but they are waiting to hear from the Irwin Borough to see if they can contribute a potion of the needed funds. A group has formed to support the reopening of the theatre.

This group: “Relight the Lamp” can be found on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_202023506505491&ap=1

Also, the map location for this theatre is incorrect. It is located on the “other” Main St. North of Route 30 in downtown Irwin.

Address is 222 Main Street. Per the Downtown Irwin Facebook page: HISTORY NUGGET: before the Lamp Theater ( b. 1937 ) there was The Grand Theater in the same location. This map is 1914 when they were called “Moving Pictures”. (map in gallery)

I visited recently and the auditorium is lovely and perfect for movies or as a performance venue. They’ve also added a dining area on the side in the theme of a retro diner, and a little box office / gift shop that has lots of neat stuff. Everyone there is super friendly so please go visit them! :)

The new facade is very cheap and characterless. Looks like part of a strip mall. The interior appears to have no design at all. The old facade was a bit odd, but was at least historic.

The Grand did not open prior to 1914, unless it had a different name (Imp or Irwin Amusement Co. are possibilites). David’s map is from 1919, not 1914. The Grand is not listed in the 1914-15 AMPD. I have created an entry for the Grand, and his map view should be moved there.
