The buildings which became the Grand Theatre were originally constructed before 1884 as two small two-story wooden storefronts. By 1899 the building had been expanded to become a variety store. The 1909 map shows this store still operating.
The theatre is not listed in the 1914-15 AMPD, but was definitely operating by 1919. The theatre was owned by W.G. Maute, who constructed a new theatre to the south, which opened in 1924. The theatre is still shown as open on the 1925 map, but no name is given. The 1926 Yearbook lists only the new Grand-Maute Theatre.
Later history is unclear, but it may have briefly reopened as the Ritz Theatre. The building was demolished by 1937 when the Lamp Theatre was constructed on this site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

This may briefly have reopened in the 1930s as the Ritz, in which case the capacity was 400.
The map view of the Grand from the Lamp entry should be moved here.
