The Calhoun Theater opened on February 20, 1942. It was operated by Alabama Theatres Inc. The opening night movie was “Look Who’s Laughing” with Edgar Bergen. The Calhoun Theater closed in the mid-1980’s.

The public library of Henderson County, North Carolina, has published a book titled “Buildings as History” which is about the works of Hendersonville architect Erle G. Stillwell. The Calhoun Theatre in Anniston, Alabama, is listed as one of the many theaters he designed.
What a shame. One beautiful theatre. Its plain but I love the marquee. Is it still standing?

Just a note to say with the release of the new Star Wars film. I saw the original Star Wars for the very first time at the Calhoun in 1981. In fact it was the first time I had ever been to a theater to see any film. Magic memories that will last forever
