Just a note to say with the release of the new Star Wars film. I saw the original Star Wars for the very first time at the Calhoun in 1981. In fact it was the first time I had ever been to a theater to see any film. Magic memories that will last forever

What a shame. One beautiful theatre. Its plain but I love the marquee. Is it still standing?
The public library of Henderson County, North Carolina, has published a book titled “Buildings as History” which is about the works of Hendersonville architect Erle G. Stillwell. The Calhoun Theatre in Anniston, Alabama, is listed as one of the many theaters he designed.

The complete address for the Calhoun is 1218 Noble Street, Anniston, AL 36201. The theatre is still standing, albeit just barely. It appears that some efforts were started to restore the theatre but were never completed. Starting here and going through here are photos of the Calhoun as of September 22, 2006.

First movie shown: Look Who’s Laughing
The Calhoun Theatre was opened on Friday, February 20, 1942 by Alabama Theatres, Inc. (which also operated the Ritz, the Noble, and the Cameo). The movie shown on opening night was Look Who’s Laughing, shown with the color cartoon, All This, and Rabbit Stew. Don Randolph from Montgomery was the first manager. It was located on Noble Street, and still exists in a run-down condition. It seated 1091 and was an entirely new building on a site formerly occupied by the Garden Theatre, which was erected during World War I. The theatre appears to have closed between July 1982 and July 1984.
