As of 2025, it looks like the lobby and auditorium are still boarded up, but one of the small side storefronts in the front is opne for business.

In September 2025 it looks like the lobby is open as a jewelry store. I don’t know if the auditorium is part of the store.

Google street view from 2022 shows renovations underway on the front part of the building, with all stores to the left of it demolished and that space used as a staging area. No activity on the auditorium at that time. Current Google aerial view (supposdely 2024) shows pretty much the same.

spectrum commented about Merrick Theater on Oct 16, 2023 at 5:09 am

From the street view, I can see through windows cut into the side of the auditorium showing track lighting along a flat white ceiling. Whether they gutted the auditorium or simply put in a drop ceiling I cannot tell.

spectrum commented about Shubert Theatre article from LI Press - May 5, 1928 on Oct 16, 2023 at 5:04 am

It looks like currently the theatre is the home to a furniture store. The main entrance was actually on 165th street, with a narrow Auxiliary entrance on Jamaica Street. Island Furniture’s website did not have any photos of their store; hopefully the auditorium decor is still intact, but I don’t know if that is the case.

spectrum commented about Calvin Theatre on Sep 27, 2023 at 12:38 pm

The Calvin Theatre has been closed since the COVID shutdown - website still up, and still owned by Iron Horse Entertainment (also owns the Iron Horse music hall and Pearl Street Nightclub nearby). Hopefully they can get financing back in order to re-open at some point.

spectrum commented about Victory Theatre on Aug 4, 2023 at 2:41 am

During late 2022 and early 2023, the Victory received two grants from the city towards construction and they are continuing to pursue other funding sources, including the state legislature. Progress still being made. Estimated total cost of restoration now sits at $44,000,000, but it is good to see the progress made on raising funds!

I remember the auditorium being long and narrow, with ornamental pillars along the sidewalls and curtains between them, and a small shelf balcony in the back.

The current building on this site looks like it was originally a wollworth’s building, probably built early to mid 1950s. It is currently occupied by two retail stores.

Looks like the renovation is complete! Their website calendar lists concerts going on throughout the summer. The new photos look great!

2021 Google aerial and street views from 2021 show the building still as a parking garage, with the roof above the auditorium full of holes. But the roof around the office portion looks new so that part may still be occupied.

2022 update:

https://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Development-deal-dead-Bridgeport-seeks-100M-for-17391746.php

Nad news. The development deal with Exact Capital collapsed in 2021 and Bridgeport is looking to apply to the state Community Investments fund for grants to help support a possible future development deal with private interests, but it looks like a long shot - they felt that a purely privately funded redevelopment was not feasible at this time.

Let’s hope this works…
