As long as the owner says it’s okay I will.

I will have to ask the owner of the picture.

I purchased a picture of the Williamsburg from www.brooklynpix.com
It’s from 1966.

Hi LuisV. I guess I am misguided. What one person considers ‘gritty’ another considers an eyesore. I was pretty lost around that time and I found in that old Times Square something that resonated with me: neglect, abandoned, but still a diamond in the rough that needed TLC.

I recall an article in the NY Daily News about this theater, which by then was a sorry sight. The theater was way beyond its prime. It was a sad site.
The article was about the theater’s dilapidated condition. It had become a haven for drug dealers, homeless, and other assorted characters. The politician made it clear that there was no way the theater would be renovated, which the communited was hoping for.

Thanks for the great picture.
Did this theater ever show porn? The titles, With Desires in my Fingers (roughly transalated from Spanish) seems odd.

When I was there last year I saw the same sign. The gates were up and I almost made it into the auditorium but some guy came by and basically told me to take a hike. From the looks of the lobby just past the front door it seems they were operating a discount store but it failed.
It was so sad to see a great beauty like the Adams reduced to a discount store.

They are turning this into a gay porno theater come spring time.

Ed I agree with your idea about the Paramount. But with the NJPAC nearby I wonder if the power-that-be will allow such competition. I feel that the Paramount would make a great theater to stage shows like the New Amsterdam in Times Square. It’s a shame that developers don’t think like we do. We are able, for the most part, to see a broader picture. They see things in dollars per square feet.

I walked by the old Rainbow Theatre last week and saw there is a FOR RENT sign up with a phone number. I hope this means that the new management realizes that this theatre will do well as an entertainment venue.

My mother, brother and his wife went to the concert featuring El Gallo and other acts. Show started at 8:00 PM and ended at 1:00 AM. My mother said the theater was packed. I asked my sister-in-law to take a picture of the auditorium but my mother said she forgot her camera but did take one with her phone. I haven’t receieved it yet but I will let you all know. As for the auditorium my mother said it needs a paint job badly. She also said the balcony was sealed off since the upstairs is rented to a church. But otherwise it was a sell-out show and there is one more tonight. I hope the owners realize that they have a goldmine on their hands. With the influx of new people into the neighborhood there is a great need to have a venue to stage shows and other functions for the community.

I agree with Ed. downtown Newark has that gritty feel to it that Times Square once had. Soon it will be scrubbed clean and it will lose its real vibe. The Newark Paramount, with lots of love and cash, could become a great concert hall.

I heard that on December 1-2 there is going to be a show by Puerto Rican singer El Gallo at the former Rainbow Theater. I haven’t been able to confirm this. If it is so that would be great. I think maybe the Rainbow might be saved from the wreckers ball.

I sent an email to the realtor asking if he would allow me into the theater to take photos before it is sold and razed. You think I might have any luck?

I don’t know the name of the rapper but he has a home theater with a marquee that reads, LOEW’S PITKIN. I think it’s 50 Cents. I would love to find that picture.

I remember when the NY Daily News carried ads for XXX-Rated movies. And who could forget those ads for gay porn?
No mainstream newspaper could away with now in this high-moral times.
