I saw Hitchcok’s Frenzy at the Palace in the early 70s. Was this before or after Mr. Chips? I am not sure, but they went back to legit soon after with Lauren Bacall in Applause.

Remember Pia Zadora? Years ago she played Anne Frank in a regional theater — don’t remember where. Her acting was so bad that when the Gestapo came into the annex the audience screamed, “She is in the attic, she is in the attic”.

Agree with Bill and William. Install Cinerama and play 70mm classics and classic festivals including 3D films like Dial M For Murder.

Well Bill, your first roadshow experience must have been very thrilling, 3 strip Cinerama, wow! It’s a shame we don’t have a Cinerama house in our area.

But Bill, Spartacus, Lawrence and the others were two a day roadshow presentations, you had to see them from the beginning starting with the overture and the curtain closed. Are you referring to having seeing them in continuous performances in a move over, usually in 35mm not 70mm, after the roadshow engagement?

Besides keeping the noise of projectors isolated so not to bother the audience, because of the combustible nature of the nitrate film, movie theaters had to be self standing and not under the same roof as is today with theaters in the basement or first floor of an apartment or office building — i.e., Loews 84th St. in NYC and others. If I am not mistaken, even though safety film was around for years, it was not until movie palaces were torn down and multiplexes began to appear in malls, etc., that movie theaters began to be included under the same roof as other businesses.

What’s next? A communist Chinese from China elected president of the US?

In a story about the socioeconomic situation of Yauco in today’s Primera Hora newspaper, Mayor Abel Nazario is quoted as saying that the Teatro Ideal restoration will be finished in October. ( Just one months before the elections).

I don’t know, but now that NYC has no Cinerama house, couldn’t the Ziegfeld put a 3-strip Cinerama equipment and screen even though it is not designed in the design favored by Cinerama as in the Capitol, the Dome, etc.? Besides Cinerama they could screen 70mm classics like Lawrence in a curved screen. What do you think DEFG? I know the only time that Cinerama was shown here, as explained in earlier comments, it was in 70mm, but could real Cinerama be shown here?

PS – The interior is simple modern style, no Art Deco like the original, but it is fine for the times.

Luis V: Though it is not the Metro we knew and loved, Caribbean Cinemas did a magnificent job in triplexing it, better than ones I have seen in the US mainland. The lobby is more or less the same, candy stand in the same place. The 3 auditoriums are sideways from left to right wall, with the #1, the largest, in the old stage/screen area and the #2 and 3 towards the lobby. Even the #3 is a reasonable size, not a shoebox. All have good sized screens relative to the size of the auditorium and good sound. I have been told the new seats installed recently are not as confortable as the original ones.I have not been at the Mero in a year (I live in NYC).

LuisV, the reason I “know so much about this theater” is because I managed it for a few months while I was being trained as the assistant to Rafael Cobian Jr. at the home office in the mornings. I don’t remember what the interior looked like as the Capitol. As the Metropolitan it was a simple modern design, wood paneling in the walls to about 5 or 6 feet above the floor and the walls were covered with grey aucustic tiles with the stereo speakers on both sides and the back. The curtain rose up as in the Puerto Rico, it was not the tipe of curtain that parted to the sides as in the Paramount, Metro and most theaters. The downstairs and upstairs lobbies were also simple, neat and clean decor. As the church it is today, I have no idea what it looks like. I have never been inside.

In the IMDb site it says Tunnel of Love is in color, yet a comment by a viewer says, like Tinseltoes above who in my opinion knows what he is talking about, that it is in black and white. Anyone knows how to correct an IMDb entry?
